Tory Leadership plots, have they been slapped down? Is Cameron feeling vulnerable. Of course the alleged plot involves May and Hammond, and not those two from Top Gear either.

The trend is that we run with a deficit. There have only been 6 years since '79 when we had a surplus, and ironically 4 of them were under Brown.

Right up until '07 I believe that it was manageable.
This includes PFI right?
No it does not include PFI.

No, unfortunately I don't think it does.

However, I suspect that the privatisation in the 80s and 90s also massaged the figures a bit, so it's swings and roundabouts.

It's not right that we don't have entirely transparent figures, but you can only go by the figures that you are given.
Noted re privatisation - and that also removed a whole load of "running costs" too

Also don't forget Brown had £22Bn from the sale of the 3G mobile licenses and, conservatively, £75Bn out the pension funds while he was chancellor & PM, not to mention innumerable other indirect tax rises etc. He even managed to put income tax up by the back door via fiscal drag on the allowances.

As I said, every administration employs mechanisms to bodge their figures, and, unless you are willing to compile the figures, all we can do is take the given numbers as a rough guide, regardless of whether it's blue or red.
