Looking at the figures I could find, the numbers have been up and down and are really much the same over the last few years.

Yeh, up 500,000

Ohhhhhh, down 1,000,000 (that includes Sir Tel, he's had his share of movers)

Yeh, up again

Ohhhhh, down again etc.

I suspect that now the Internet allows freedom of choice rather than either a local or national station, Radio 1 could start to feel the effect of such technology if they don't appeal to those they are focusing on. I can listen to R4 or LBC or whatever, wherever i like in the world, that's the reality of today.

Interestingly Radio 4 podcasts are higher than those of Radio 1!

I'm in Turkey on me 'ols and can listen or watch pretty much anything I like. 3 years ago I would have been stuck with a crappy local station and a bloke chanting at dusk and dawn!

I'm certainly not a fanboy, and think he's so full of his own self importance, he actually believes his own bullst.

Radio 4 can be good but it can also be very bad.

(If your left wing credentials are less than impeccable and you like your radio drama not to be issue driven).

Some of the comedy is great (the sitcoms, surprisingly). Some of the panel games are getting a bit tiring (again, if you're not someone that thought Michael Foot was the greatest prime minister Britain never had).

The news programmes (esp PM) are very good. Biased? I think they largely cover what the cover in a fairly evenhanded way, but what they choose to cover is more like the contents of the Guardian than the Telegraph, so there's a coverage bias of sorts.
