Terrible day for cricket

No, there is that, it's quite a freak accident, which is probably why it's been so shocking, given bar a few joint injuries and the odd bruise, you don't tend to expect much worse playing cricket.
Yeah, though earlier this month, Ahmed Shehzad of Pakistan was hit by a bouncer, but was lucky to escape with only a fractured cheekbone and minor skull fracture. Very sad news. I am not a huge cricket fan but I did used to play a lot when I was younger. Having been hit by the ball a few times you never consider it could end up like this.

I know what it's for, but the end result is, cricket has had to switch to serious headgear because of the risk of getting clouted on the head because of it...
The question is, does cricket need that risk to still be the sport it is? The only sensible answer to that - unlike boxing, etc - is, no. Because it worked just fine without it.
Personally I think both sides are going to have some work cut out with their bowlers because it's going to make them all think twice about sending a short ball in in future games.
But what about fielding at silly mid off, short leg, etc? You could easily end up getting hit in the same way. I'm sure they will seriously look at helmet safety and how it can be improved after this though. The question is, does cricket need that risk to still be the sport it is? Sorry but you're wrong. Just listening to the scores of pro cricketers today should tell you that. To put it in every day terms.... Do you cross roads? Walk down stairs? Swim? Phil's death was a terrible accident.

Exactly. To put it in every day terms.... Do you cross roads? Walk down stairs? Swim? Phil's death was a terrible accident.
It's a tragic accident. It's an incredibly remote statistical probability that is being blown out of all proportion.
It is incredibly sad for all involved. For his family, his friends, and for poor, poor Sean Abbott.

Michael Vaughan was talking about the close fielders last night on Radio 5 and suggesting that padding and helmets like short stops in baseball wear may be used as that always seemed the most dangerous position on the pitch to him. I'm not a sports fan at al but I shed a tear in quiet contemplation on the way home last night with the 6 o clock news. Terrible accident, the poor chap who bowled must be feeling bloody awful.
The snippet of the aussie newsreader breaking down whilst breaking the death was a bit sad too.
