Coronavirus - the killer flu that will wipe us out? (Vol. 2)
Discussion
Something that worries me almost more than anything else about this thing, is the concept of asymptomatic transmission.
My parents are both over 60s and my Dad is T1 diabetic and has been since he was 21. I’ve deliberately been keeping away from them because I’m exposed to more people, at different locations, more of the time than they are, so I obviously want to (as far as possible) take myself out of their risk factor.
I know some of you are in similar boats – how are you intending on managing contact in this situation?
I really don't want to not see them, but equally....

Red 4 stated that he knows there is 'a lot going on behind the scenes' and he knows this because his wife is an NHS manager.
I'm sure Mrs 4 is a lady of great probity who would respect professional boundaries & not blurt confidences outside the office. As such I would query how much he actually knows.
Our company have just said pretty much everyone in EMEA and the US has to work from home for the next 4 weeks - apart from, bizarrely, our Belgian office, which is remaining open as usual.
I've already been working from home for 3 days now working on an RFP, so am not worried about the productivity side - more the going stir crazy with only the cat to talk to. Never mind, as long as I stay healthy and the golf course remains open, I should cope.
Oh, and for the "but look at Italy" crowd of bedwetters:

Various sources ( inc The Times ) report that Iran is excavating mass graves visible from space. Perhaps this is balls, and they are digging some huge new swimming pools. But opposition parties claim the death toll is 3.5k and climbing fast.
The graveyard is not visible from space, its visible on Google earth. It's an existing graveyard for a large city, and has roads etc that have been there for years.
It may be that they are excavating graves in preparation for burials, but it's not massive holes in the ground in the middle of nowhere.
It should also be noted that in some sects, Islamic burial is a large trench in the ground with bricks separating each individual. It's part of the ritual to lay the body wrapped in cloth(with prayers printed on them) directly on the ground, then lay tiles and wet cement or a cement slab over the top.
My father(of Iranian descent) was buried in this manner at an Islamic cemetery in Spain.
So this is unlikely to simply be a big hole in the ground where bodies will be dumped as some seem to be attempting to assert.

It is starting to appear that the wider UK population, organisations and companies have rejected Boris' plans.
Everywhere you look organisations/companies/individuals are taking a decision that goes further than what the Gov has laid out. I don't wish to politicise this event but when we consider that our PM has been caught lying time and again, then I wonder if this comes as a surprise to anyone other than the PM's supporters?
I'm not a supporter of the PM, I couldn't bring myself to vote for him in the general. I couldn't help but feel the press conference yesterday was well delivered and measured and unlike the other blond world leader he's so often compared to he is taking the scientific viewpoint and deferring to our experts.Everywhere you look organisations/companies/individuals are taking a decision that goes further than what the Gov has laid out. I can understand why businesses are taking action now, even if the virus is not deadly to the majority of the working age population it could knock people out of work for a week or two. Companies are trying to ensure continuity of business.
To assert that they're doing this out of any true concern for individual welfare is a little naive in my view.

Chief medical officer or some NHS middle manager hmmmmmm its a hard one to decide who might be best qualified to give advice
OK. Why are other countries' CMOs wrong ?Why aren't other countries following our game plan ?
Edited by Red 4 on Friday 13th March 11:58
Nobody has the single best way of dealing with it.
Personally I'm happy to go with whatever the CMO of this country thinks we should be doing. Blindly following another country because you don't like the PM is not a sensible approach IMO.

The Premier League have released a statement that states they were talking to the Gov, therefore we should assume that they have read the same medical analysis as the Gov. Do you think they would look at the current medical advise and just simply ignore it? Contrary to the above statement, they have little to benefit by stopping the matches, in fact it would think they will lose a substantial amount of money.
So they're getting advice from the government, then ignoring it?ChocolateFrog said:
Just been in lidl and they told a man to put all but 2 loaves of bread back, he was trying to buy 6 loaves.
I felt guilty buying 4 bog rolls.

What IS daft is thinking the only people in the NHS who know anything are Doctors and Nurses
I do see epidemiology as a medical rather than management topic, tbf.Do you think a manager of such a department might know a lot more about the present situation than a SR in A&E for example ?
Do you think a long serving Medical Rep who has specialised for years might know more about a specific subject than a GP ?
(the above are just examples)

A further example would be the CMO & CSO presumably with their respective staffs knowing more than an (allegedly senior) NHS manager.Do you think a manager of such a department might know a lot more about the present situation than a SR in A&E for example ?

I like this game- your turn.
