The soviets were actually invited by the authority at the time to help battle the warlords. The warlords took over, and ended up fighting the Russians.
And I'm sure the idea of spreading Communism never crossed their minds.Bit like rolling tanks into Prague to help flatten the cobble stones.

You mean like the Shah in Iran? I wasn't making that point, however the vast number of people who think the Russians invaded Afghanistan is absurd. I'm not saying it is right, but the fact remains that they did not invade, and were invited by the authority at the time. Like it or loath it, that's how it was. Another point of interest was that the Russians never had anything to do with the insertion of the government at the time.
And all of that mattered how in the big scheme of things? ![wink](/inc/images/wink.gif)

If you think this to be false then maybe you too should get those books opened. ![wink](/inc/images/wink.gif)
I spent a fair bit of time reading up on the modern history in Indochina when I was in Thailand several years ago. I was there for a few months and it seemed like the right thing to do. Very interesting, and you certainly get an idea of how nations, especially the US, we're moving to protect other countries from Communism moving past it's current borders. Thailand was a huge benefactor of the policy of containment.![wink](/inc/images/wink.gif)
Moving on from what the west were doing to keep Communism behind its own borders, you also get to see the writings of the Thai king for instance who was often fated by the Chinese. When they gave him tours of China showing off Communism, it is well written that he merely saw an oppressed people who were poorer than his own starving to death, than this great political ideal called Communism.
