Gaffes are a problem & they accumulate. In the past 48 hours, Sunak has managed to gift a bunch of Drowning street headlines, get photographed by an exit sign & in front of a dream Morrisons logo, refused to pay out on a charity bet & somehow associate himself with the Titanic & your ovrarchng take is it's a Photoshop you idiots?

Yeah, we know you genius,
This is one of the issues with our wonderful Western world at the moment (it's not just here and it's far from one way traffic).

If the Morrisons one was a photoshop (if it wasn't it is genius photography!) it casts doubt on the other stuff that the most rabidly "anti" then post up. Likely incorrectly so.

Rather than pounce on every last scrap, a bit more thought and filtering of the vitriol/mirth would actually hit the target so much better. But people can't help themselves in today's instant gratification world.

Does it matter, because the guy's still a prick? In one sense no, because I agree.

But what happens when it's something important that we're getting duped on? And how do we filter that stuff out?

Possibly far more concerning but is this leaving us way more open to properly bad actors (Russia, China etc)?

We're already in a dead end on this and the discussion about whether it's fake or not shows it. Anything genuine can now be waved away by saying it's a photoshop or deepfake and it takes too long to work out which is which.

The campaign is already getting nasty, not from the main parties but from the ordinary people commenting online (not so much on here) and if it is this bad here, think what America will be like. Maybe it's for the best that we'll be finished before theirs gets properly started.

Not so much, but not so good either. The situation over there will surely be interesting to watch from a distance.

So it seems the brainstorming day has yielding its first new policy.... reintroduction of national service...

IMHO I don't think you can launch this type of policy out of the blue. There has been no conversation, no discussion weighing the pros and cons, no consensus which concluded that on balance it makes sense.

My own initial feeling is that it sounds like a terrible idea... but I would need to hear a lot more detail and hear from those, both for and against, before reaching a decision, particularly as my own children would be affected by this in the future if implemented.

I much preferred the rumour on Twitter today than Sunak had decided to stand down and let Cameron run for PM (even though that was always pie in the sky).

I think I've read three articles suggesting it will be necessary in five years time and it sort of follows from David Cameron's Big Society but it's not enough for people to accept electorally given how they branded it, which makes it sound bigger than I think it is.

They should call it "the choice" - either join the forces or do a glorified D of E.

It must be clear by now that someone has placed a series of massive bets on how much the Conservatives lose the election by.

Someone being Rishi?

Wonder if this was agreed at cabinet level or if he's gone completely nuts off piste?

If nothing else Trevor Phillips on Sunday will be interesting tomorrow

This might not be Sunak's definitive "Ed Stone" moment, but it's a nice warm-up.

I'm reminded of the Labour party spin doctor at party HQ seeing Ed unveil his Stone on live TV and just standing in front of the screen screaming at the top of his lungs, to the point of being on the verge of passing out.

I hope they've got some emergency oxygen cylinders and sedatives ready at CCHQ.

Once again Rishi leads from the front and delivers.
People may not know what they really want but Rishi can tell people what they really really want and then the people know that it was what they really really wanted.
His uncanny ability to tap into what people really want is unparalleled. It is the stuff of legend that is known to a few within the Tory ranks.
When Rishi first joined government a few within the cabinet became aware of this almost extra sensory aura that pervades around him.

Boris Johnson knew it as did Nadine Dorries as did others and they feared it. They feared him like no other. Jacob Rees Mogg is on record as saying "there is a man today who will reinvent the tory party into new new Labour and will lead the party into areas it has never been before"

The only real worry for other Conservative big wigs is that it may be too much too soon.
Be prepared for other major announcements soon. I suspect Rishi may soon announce his plans for "the peoples car" the electric vehicle that will be given free to every UK citizen and will at a stroke remove all the petrol/ diesel oil guzzling vehicles from the roads.
There will of course be a national competition to name the new car which will be provisionally known as the Folkswagon

These are exciting times, times that could only be dreamed off before Rishi became Tory l;eader.
Some people may be scared and apprehensive and fear the times we live in. They may feel that time is a predator that stalks us all our lives but the enlightened will realise that time is a companion that goes with us on our journey reminds us to cherise every moment because they will never come again, What we leave behind is not as important as how we lived.

Issuing every household with a rocket launcher may be another plan

The cost of this idea will be staggering.

Tories keep on that Labour will waste money yet here we go.

Just think

Staffing levels in the services are at rock bottom

Where do the extra staff live?

Its barmy.

Guy has lost the plot.

There is an alternative of some voluntary work once a month, which I imagine most would pick in the unlikely event of the Tories being elected. It is a gimmick nothing more.

Sounds like a plan Rishi Sunak has plucked out of the sky to appeal to the traditional over 60's Tory voters who will think it's a wonderful idea because they blame the youth of today for everything and it won't affect them or their own children and they feel their grandchildren are going off the rails.

As a parent in my early 40's with two children it would affect it has pretty much sealed my vote to Labour
