As I understand it, the etymology of the word sport is that it was first applied to hunting and its use later spread to other activities.

A sport should always include elements of fairness and challenge. Which is why this kind of rubbish is not a sport. You could even say its unsporting.

It's neither active nor physical so it can't be. Angling barely passes muster, but let's not go there.

Donald Trump berates Alex Salmond for his stance on wind-farms and renewables, possibly launching legal challenge to windfarm offshore by his new golf course.

Paper prints non-story about Trump offspring doing something unpalatable to some.

Coincidence? scratchchin

I think this is the point. Elephants are great, but I recall reading an article saying their numbers have to be controlled. If you have to kill a few elephants anyway, why not get some saddo with more cash than sense to boost his own fragile ego by killing them for you, and charge him a fortune for the experience. That money can then be ploughed back into safeguarding the future of the other elephants.

Priciples are all well and good, but sound economic sense is what will preserve these animals.
THIS

In fact even canned hunts (as despicable as most of us find them) do have a positive impact on the local economy, after all lions bred to be shot wouldn't be born otherwise, they have to be fed and looked after until some prick shots them.
Don't see how elephants are more intelligent than pigs and I'm sure the hand wringers love their bacon.

Oh and big cats are not cute, they are killers, ask the local people.

Although I can hardly see the average Scot being upset about hunting.

Unless of course, he didn't deep fat fry the animals before they were eaten, or they were served with vegetables.

There is a bit of an odd situation with regards to hunting over land almost anywhere in the world.

Quite simply, nearly all hunt animals live where the grass is good. This is also exactly where we want to farm.

We now have the situation that the reason we need to cull animals like elephants is because the local populations have encroached onto their land and reduced it.

However, so long as the revenue from allowing people to shoot these animals is greater than the revenue from converting more land to farming etc then the remaining animals are safe.

If people like Trump Jnr didn't pay an awful lot of money to shoot things in the face then humans would expand into the area rapidly.

We have reached a point in many places that hunting revenues and tourism are the only way to save the land and the animals on it.

Bunny hugging won't ever be able to do that.

Until bunny hugged can develop a mechanism which preserves the land, rewards the locals for protecting it and the species on it, gainfully employs society and doesn't line the pockets of local thieves then they are simply doing more harm than good to jeopardise legal hunting.

So you've done research into elephant vs pig cognition? Your assertion goes against what I've read. Elephants are regarded as one of the most intelligent animals, and whilst pigs are pretty bright (dog level) they fall some way below in terms of problem solving, self awareness etc...

I guess you'd describe me as a hand-wringer, but you are wrong in your certainty about what I will and won't eat. I've not seen anyone describe big cats as cute.

Reading can help that.

I'm sure the ilk of people who wish to go and kill big powerful animals will always say, 'oh it's good for the economy/conservation'.biggrin
