Why do they keep it there, I can't fathom that.
Yes it serves as a reminder and all that, but it's so close to the town, regular people will have to walk past it every day. Can't get my head around why they didn't / don't flatten it. It's not like it would make it easier for the deniers to, erm deny!
When you get a serial killer or some other sicko in the UK, once the trial has completed they destroy the house where the crimes took place, completely shred them so that there's nothing for trophy hunters to collect. IMO they should do the same to Auschwitz, it's been 70 years, it has no business being there.
What a knob you are. Unbelievable! Yes it serves as a reminder and all that, but it's so close to the town, regular people will have to walk past it every day. Can't get my head around why they didn't / don't flatten it. It's not like it would make it easier for the deniers to, erm deny!

They keep it there as a reminder of mans inhumanity, and to guard against a repeat.

We have a villa in a urbanisation in the algarve. Just to paint the scene- The urbanisation is large grounds villas with prices from €500k plus (even reccession years). Traditional gates are green painted iron type to stone boundary wall and hedges.
Lovely area.
A couple of years ago the suspected german new owners of a villa near to ours started work on the gates..... The traditional green 6ft max high gates were replaced with exceptionally heavy, very solid and very sinister dark brown solid wood gates I would guess 18ft high. Totally out of place......They bring hairs out on the back of your neck.
To our horror once finished two large nazi swastika embossed markings were added to each door. To make matters worse - to the tops of the gates they have alcoves. In these recesses stands a canister in each. After a few times walking past I am now 90% certain what these canisters are.......We have to drive past everytime to get out the village and back past again to get home....We all know there are still many sick people around...........
That sounds unbelievable. Let's have some pics surely! Are you sure that its not the Portuguese making a documentary about the Wannsee conference. We have a villa in a urbanisation in the algarve. One thing I was thinking about afterwards, is how it got to that stage. Hitler didn't decide overnight to follow this path, and it must have been some progression that happened over a period of time.. How did it all start then? Some nationalism? Blaming a group of people for the countries woes?
A few years ago I began reading about what went on at the various camps. It started with a book called "A Square of Sky" by Janina David, which mentions Treblinka. So I read a book about Treblinka, which mentioned another camp, so I read about that, and so on etc. As I read each book, I ended them with more questions than answers really. But two things struck me mostly. Firstly, why was I not taught this at school (I'm in my thirties now) and why are my children not taught this at school, and secondly, there are no complete answers at all as to how this happened and why it wouldn't happen again. There's plenty of opinions of course, some are probably very valid, but none that I've read or heard so far really convince me to the point where I can go "Ahh yes, of course, if we just do this and that, we can avoid anything like this happening again".
My second point above is most disturbing really, and leaves me wondering what's to stop it happening again. I probably just need to read more about the whole subject, though some of it is very uncomfortable. But then it needs to be really, doesn't it?
I was at Berlin last year for 10 days and we visited Sauchenhausen. The smell in the barracks bit was horrendous. All the beds etc we left just as they were and I felt as if I had gone back in time. It took us three hours to walk round the whole camp and we took about 500 photos between us.

Not to derail the thread or be morbid etc but can someone reccommend any companies which are good to use for doing a weekend tour of Auschwitz etc? Looked to go a few years back with the intention of staying in a small bedsit close by but never materialised.
Thanks.
Stay in Krakow and do a tour from there.Thanks.
The Man who Broke in to Auschwitz a fantastic read for those interested.

I'd second that it's very touching and chilling at the same time. I think there are also some interviews with him on YouTube.jjones said:

Also you do not need a tour, plenty of information there and you can drive to pretty much outside the gates. Take comfortable shoes, there is a lot of walking once inside the camp. They are right though, its a LOT of walking. The first small camp is several hours & has most of the 'famous bits' like the rooms full of shoes, suitcases & hair etc. The second camp (Camp3) after a free bus trip is much bigger & is where the railway went.

But then again surely the film makers would have told the locals?
