It has been a bit of a depressing year if you are living in the West with the slow drip of economic news, lots of dysfunctional politics all over the world, and an uncertain economic future. In thinking if a specific event that will have the largest long term impact, what would that be? Arab Spring?.Felton the Dog?.....

One that seems to be pretty far reaching to me is the China-Japan deal on currency where they will directly trade with each other rather than use the US$ as the intermediate exchange. I think it is the beginning to the rise of the Yan as a serious reserve currency with an unknown impact on the dollar. You have to winder if oil, for instance were to be priced in a basket of currencies rather than on the US$ alone. It will take a number of years to see how this plays, but Japan is China's biggest export market, not the US. The world continues to realign.

Obviously a lot went on this year. Any suggestions for the most important one?

I suspect the Euro crisis will have massive ramifications. Quite sad really, it's considered a structural thing but listening to R4 on the way home it's really affecting a lot of Greeks in very individual ways- Collapse of businesses, lack of jobs etc.

I personally think that DC has done the right thing, time will tell whether this puts us in stronger stead for the future. The GBP/EUR rate trend would suggest so.
