"A 24-year-old man was critically injured when his vehicle hit three parked cars in Bolton.

"Greater Manchester Police said the man lost control of his Honda Civic as he drove along Newbrook Road, Over Hulton, at 01:00 BST.

"He suffered serious head injuries when he was thrown through the windscreen and landed on the pavement."

BBC News

I'd like to know more about this; for starters, was he wearing a seat belt? Also, if the Honda Civic was a post 1987-ish car, the windscreen should be directly glazed, ie, bonded to the car. Did he go through the glass (tearing through the PVB interlayer) or did the glass 'pop out' of the car?

Agreed. Was allowing for belt failure or breakage.

If the car rolled, the inertia-reel mechanism could well have 'let go'. It happened to a fellow Lotus-owner, who was lucky to get away with a broken arm.

That's (one of) the reasons I have a 'CG Lock' which tensions the lap belt in place.

Our 55 plate civic had a recall because it was one of a faulty batch where the window seal failed, perhaps he had one of these, I doubt he was wearing a seat blet in which case he's probably quite lucky the screen did go through, must have been travelling at some speed.

I remember something about baby elephants and pizzas from some advert in the past.

Maybe Ford Focus owners should be worried after this crash left two dead on a wide 30mph road.

There is a local accident hotspot very similar to that on Cannock Chase, a tricky bend which, incoreectly executed at illegal speeds, is lethal. Kids regualrly detonate their cars here, with similar, catastrophic results. Natural selection.
