Irena Sendler
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irena_Sendler

Died: May 12, 2008 (aged 98)
Warsaw, Poland

During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an ulterior motive.

Irena smuggled Jewish infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried. She also carried a burlap sack in the back of her truck, for larger kids.

Irena kept a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto.

The soldiers, of course, wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.

During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants.

Ultimately, she was caught, however, and the Nazi's broke both of her legs and arms and beat her severely.

Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she had smuggled out, In a glass jar that she buried under a tree in her back yard. After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived and tried to reunite the family. Most had been gassed. Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or adopted.

In 2007 Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize.
She was not selected.
Al Gore won, for a slide show on Global Warming.

Al gore deserves a lot of stick but not for this. The people who choose are at fault here.

Then again the whole thing has been a farce for years. You get one for being black and getting voted president these days.

I can't see why either of them was up for it, unless I've missed something.

According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize shall be awarded to the person who "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

Nominees are kept secret for 50 years, so there is no way of verifying this story.

Besides, whilst being an incredibly worthy act, deserving of recognition and reward, I'm not sure how it relates to World peace in 2007, which is what the award is supposed to be for.

I think it was more for the work of IPCC than just big Al. Whatever you think is the cause of climate change, it is happening, and it will cause major friction between nations due to rising sea levels, shortage of water, excess of water, inaccessible areas becoming accessible, so any organisation that can mitigate its effects or deal with the fall-out is within the prize's remit. The fact that the IPCC has since achieved sweet FA is not something the 2007 jury could necessarily have foreseen.

The only catastrophic climate change that the Earth can (and has) suffered is an Ice Age. The IPCC is doing the opposite of preparing the Earth for that real eventuality (it has happened it will happen again) .

IPCC preparing us for an ice age, that's some sense of humour smile and yes what you say is spot on.

The IPCC serves no useful purpose, it was set up as an advocacy group to bolster support for political opportunism based on a scam by exploiting 'useful idiots' to do the bidding of activists.
