Shame we don't have any Nimrod MRA-4's left - it could join the search

Is it not slightly odd that a Submarine doesn't have some sort of emergency locator beacon ?

I guess that these wouldn't work that well underwater which doesn't bode particularly well frown

I think this will soon be spotted sailing up a Scottish river.
Then some Royal Navy helicopters will be seen whinching down some people into it

It is a stealth submarine.

I get that but, why wouldn't there be an 'emergency' locator beacon for situations like this ? As it states in the article, if comms go down then the procedure is to surface (presumably to use such beacon) to indicate there is an issue.

What do the SOLAS regulations say about safety measures for subs?

tumbleweedteacher

German designed/built, but maintained by Argentina with a budget of a couple of pesos found down the back of the sofa.
Looks like its likely still on the continental shelf, so if the people tank (pressure hull) is still intact it may be survivable, as would a pure comms failure.
Anything else does not look good for the crew.

Forty four people potentially drowned or suffocated or crushed to death, but "stuff 'em", or send that well known anti submarine aircraft the Vulcan (not) after them. Gotta love NPE!

Awful on a human level, hope there’s a good outcome.

Incidentally (much less important I know), interesting that Germany supplied this to them just a few years after the Falklands War. I haven’t googled and obviously the deal would have been long since agreed, but I find that surprising. Together with the French military supplies, not much EU solidarity on display then.

you are of course totally correct BV. It's dreadful for all concerned and I imagine everyone hopes they are found.

Let's just pray that it is a comms failure of some description.

I believe the UK keep some pretty upto date warships in the region, they will have advanced detection equipment on board.

If we do have them in place we should offer to help in the search.
