We recently bought a new cutlery set (Viners brand) - but the teaspoons are developing a bluish hue.

The handles are fine, it's just the spoon part itself.

They've not been washed in a dishwasher (we don't have one) and neither have they been scoured with a pad - just washed in hot water with Fairy liquid and a foam squeegee thingy.

They are used to make tea and coffee.

Any idea why they'd develop this bluish hue?

Copper coming through a badly plated zinc coating?
I would be emailing Viners with as much detail as you have.
Do you still have the box?
It should have a batch number on it.

Box long gone, was disposed of on day of purchase about a month ago. Probably rash I know.

We have a couple of Viners stainless steel teaspoons that are all that remain of a 55 year old set. Were fine until a couple of years ago when we started to use them to eat boiled eggs. Now have a rather attractive blue tint to the inside of the bowls.

I had a hard boiled egg sandwich(with cress) Sunday and was constipated all day Monday. Egg bound possibly.
Anyway thats not not really helping with the teaspoon woes.

We also have a 50 year old canteen of cutlery, the teaspoons have a hint of blue but soon fixed with Goddards silver polish wadding.

Not sure that silver canteens are the thing that they once were, same as dinner services, I used to enjoy having people round and get out the posh stuff, pity really.

Hmm, a bit mainstream. I think you show more knowledge and experience by selecting a Christoffle spoon for your guests to enjoy.

Fair bet the tarnish is because you're dipping those ends in a hot liquid with some harsh chemicals in it; the tea & coffee.

Probably clean up with a dip in citric acid or something similar, just like cleaning any other stainless.
