Passing my groceries through the checkout at the local Coop today I suddenly noticed that the operator had a video camera around her neck clearly marked 'Audio/Video'. I asked if I was being filmed and she said yes. Do I REALLY have to be filmed buying groceries? Isn't in-store CCTV enough? This isn't the Bronx, it's a sleepy Essex town. Where/when does 'consent' come into it? No doubt it's all legal but I feel things have gone too far. One is tempted to film them back and see what happens.

I am sure you were filmed from the moment you entered the store to the moment you left it on the fixed cameras.

This sounds very overt and noticeable but I doubt it is any different to all the fixed cameras littering the store that you appear not to have a problem with.

Also bear in mind the Co-op have been on the telly and in the media complaining about thefts, assaults on staff, etc so this seems to be the price everyone else has to pay because of the scrotes.

Given the st retail workers have to put up with quite honestly I'd say try and see it from their point of view and give them a break.

Their camera will achieve its purpose of identifying people harassing staff, and you'll find yourself having to shop elsewhere?

Well, not quite… the colleagues actually have personally chosen to wear a camera. It is offered to them by their companies, not required.

But as per the earlier point, you may want to consider what may have happened to that person that leads them to want every moment they work to be filmed. It comes back to the behaviour of a small minority of people and the lack of any appropriate intervention from those who are meant to uphold order in our society*.

Working for a retailer, I can confirm it is astounding and horrifying what actually occurs daily.

  • NB this is directed at a far broader group than the police.

I worked in a bookies was threatened several times,
I worked in a club was threatened several times and actually had a few fights.
I work in a sofa shop was threatened several times.
I worked in a phone shop and got abuse / threatened.
Nearly anyone in some form of retail or customer facings roles will have a story to share.

The abuse / theft at the bandm next door to where I worked was absolutely disgusting and police wasn’t interested at all.

So yer it probably is necessary and also avoids he said she said it’s all there in black and white if they are abused.
I’ do a fair bit of boxing and I’m physically fit so would have a good scrap if it came to it so it was more of an annoyance, it could be petrifying for the female staff.

WGAF... your entire journey throughout the supermarket was probably filmed from the moment you walked in to the moment you left.

And they'll likely ask you to stop harassing their staff and leave the premises. Simples.

While a rather depressing thing that needs to happen, why do you feel you have any privacy when out in public?

Interesting. How much of a push from management is there for staff to wear them?

They’re bodyworn cameras to help deter scrotes from attacking and abusing them. Don’t blame the staff as it probably gives them a little bit more reassurance to do their job safely but they are no doubt cheaper than employing a security guard.

Don’t also underestimate the amount of grief shop staff receive even in a sleepy town or village.

It was on the news recently - Tescos said they were issuing bodyworn cameras in an attempt to protect their staff from assault.

You're buying groceries, why does it matter?

Or are you concerned that this is an erosion of your 'rights' and soon they'll be filming you having a poo or making love, the fascist bds.

They won't.

Go in buy stuff, leave and stop worrying.
