So the BNP are on BBC tonight......
Discussion
Lots of media discussions about how they should and shouldn't be allowed a TV stage on the BBC etc.
It has to be said that we do live in a democratic society (well supposedly)...and the BNP have been elected into council seats and even european seats and this should entitle them to voice their opinions much like any other party yes/no ??
By putting questions to the leaders of the BNP and disecting their policies on a public stage, would this not show to people if they are or are not a 'credible' party?
disclaimer : I'm not pro-ANY party to be honest....I think ALL of them are as bad as the other in how the UK is and has been affected by recent governments.

newsnight.
to be honest, i cant see how the BBC cannot put them on, as they said themselves it would be discrimitory and restricting their right to free speech.
Indeed. And whatever they say can't be any worse than some of the other "free speech" by other 'extremists' that is currently being permitted in todays UK.to be honest, i cant see how the BBC cannot put them on, as they said themselves it would be discrimitory and restricting their right to free speech.

Exactly my view. I almost think that many people are worried about how powerful they might get (having already won seats as you said) - because a lot of comments they come out with on stuff like Question Time hits a certain type of voter. If they are the horrid party that people make them out to be, they will be revealed as that through appropriate questioning and therefore people will not vote for them.
I think that's right. Of course it is better that they are put to the test. At the moment they operate in glorious isolation with just the mist of spin surrounding what they actually do and don't say.
I only hope that it doesn't turn into some sort of shouting circus. The cynic in me does think that much of the opposition is because some of the things that they spout appeal directly to a section of the community that is otherwise ignored.
Actually, not ignored, more dictated to. I spend a lot of my time in and around building sites in East London. I hear what gets said and what gets discussed. There are a lot of people prepared to pick up on the slightest word that fits in with their preconceptions and inded misconceptions. The interesting thing is that a lot of that relates to immigration yet not one of the guys I have chatted to would describe themselves as racist, just English.
Now I should also point out that I abhor both militant right and left wingers. They'll all go against the wall when I come to power, but I'm prepared to listen to both. Would those wings also be prepared to listen. I suspect not.
The scary thing is that BNP got 6% of the vote. That's a lot of people and whilst proportional representation makes that more significant than it would be in a general election I have a suspicion that % will only increase unless all the issues are properly debated.
The soapbox is now free for the next speaker.

I can see it going very badly for him and the BBC. They will be endlessly accused of being in the wrong to let him on and he will be picked apart. About 2 other people in the whole room (assuming they make the audience up as they say they do inviting a broad spectrum of views) will agree with him. This will just be a mass gangbang of abuse in his direction.
Personally, I hope he and his entire party go and die.
