"Last year Judge Christopher Ball spared Bradley Wernham, 19, of Chelmsford, a prison sentence after he admitted more than 600 offences in Essex.
Instead he was given a flat and ordered to carry out unpaid work after he promised to change his ways.
Chelmsford Crown Court heard he tried to burgle another house months later."
Dang - didn't see that coming

Of course he robbed a house again - how is he expected to pay for his smack if he's being forced to work for nothing?
Actually... serious question time:How much does unpaid community service pay?
Or do you get an exemption from 'looking for work' so you can still collect your dole?

Not that i agree with muslims normally, but isnt it one of the muslim countrys where they cut your hand of for stealing? If it is, then maybe we should cut both of his hands off, then see if he can nick anything
Or better still, cut off his head so he cannot even THINK about stealing anything."Given a flat" - Thats where they went wrong. Some people are beyond help.

5 years for burglary - thats a bit stiff.
After 600 offences? Is it fk. Should have been ten years.
So, I am not suggesting that it should be less. As a victim of crime, I would go a lot further, but merely making an observation. Not a suggestion on being lenient.
A guy I know always seems to get in trouble. As a kid in school he would always be sent out or told off. As an adult he has got a few convictions for criminal dammage and other petty things. After his latest charge he got a bit of comunity service. He thought that was great as it's the first time he has had a punishment that wasn't a telling off, saying sorry or a fine. He actually said " even when I was young I worked out I could do whatever I wanted then I just had to say sorry". It seems that attitude went unchecked until he got this comunity service.
I think thats the mentality you are fighting. That guy with his petty crimes knows all he has to do is say sorry and he can go and do it all again tomorrow. I dont think people find a motivation to change until you are forced to. Rewarding the guy with a flat for stealing is priceless. I bet he fed the judge some brilliant lines.
