I've just had a call from one of our tenants who claims that he and his partner are being repeatedly harrassed by census enforcement people.

Apparently when his partner was on her way out the door to work, one of these "enforcers" got into a stand-up row with her because she would not go back into the house and complete it there and then.

There might, of course, an element of hyperbole in the account. However, I am surprised that any form of enforcement action is being taken.

Has anyone else seen evidence of this?

Because I thought the threats being made about enforcement were idle ones.

Just because you make a nice killing renting flats to illegals doesn't mean the rest of us want them here. laugh

It often seems to be the case that when any organisation uses big letters and strong words to make a threat, it is because the threat is an idle one.

The tenant in question is a determined sort of chap, and he seems quite set on not completing the census. It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Don't they punish the landlord rather than the tenant though for non-completion?

confused Only if the landlord is in occupation on the day of the census, shirley?

I cannot see how or why they could. It is not the landlord's responsibilty, where single occupancy dwellings are concerned anyway.

Just the sort of scrote these types of civic obligations are designed to weed out.

I seem to remember that we read up on it (partner is a landlord) and she would face the fine if the tenant did not complete the census.

I might be wrong though!

I think you might have misunderstood the purpose of the census.

I moved into a house on the 1st of April. Census was filled in at the old place.

This is apparently very very hard to understand.

Just looked it up and I was wrong. It's whoever was staying the night that needs to fill it in and is responsible. Apologies!

Not in the least; it's just one cog in the system. What it purports to do and what, in reality, its actual utility is are not necessarily the same.

So you think that whilst ostensibly a tool for mapping population and demographics, it is in reality a covert plot to root out dissenters and ne'er-do-wells?

No, it is simply to justify the existence of some of our civil servants. wink
