I really liked his style of presenting & his programmes were always interesting.

A sad loss in many ways.

A sad day. He was from the knowledgeable and enthusiastic school of presenting.

He is one of my favourite historians.
He has passed away?

Today apparently

Very sorry to hear it, I used to enjoy his programmes.

ETA. Since I posted the link the Wikipedia entry has been amended as there is now no reference to his passing that I can see.

Seems the web has caught up...sad.
A historian with enthusiasm...always a pleasure for me.

That news has just ruined my weekend. Nice human being with a common touch.

I liked his programs, aways seemed to have an empathy with the footsoldiers, I guess that`s why.

I liked his shows, always displayed a real passion for his work. Makes a big difference to a show when you have someone who has that passion and knows what they are talking about, next to the BBC , Sky Channel 5 etc just hiring a pretty face in.

In one of his programmes on WW1, he visited the ossuary at Verdun and commented "This is the saddest place I have ever been." I visited there 11 years ago and his observation was spot on.

He came to my work a year or so and gave a talk on military leadership, absolutely awesome and the sort of orator who could talk about the most boring subjects and keep you totally enthralled.

I have bought several of his books, all of which were excellent; he will be sadly missed - RIP.

I fear that Richard Holmes will suffer from what I like to call the Mother Theresa Effect, by having his death announced on the same day as Henry Cooper, a man whose only talent was to hit people.
