Pope Francis - not looking good

Seems like the 88 year old Pope Francis could be in a grave condition. It's unusual for the Vatican to be so vocal about his health - but doesn't sound too positive.

Advanced age, pre-existing medical conditions, infection, blood needed...not great signs. Anything could happen.

Much of the world will be praying for him, so he is isn't facing it alone.

Maybe they should choose a younger one next time if they want some longevity.

Pope John Paul II was a more sprightly 58 when he became Pope. Might be good if the next one was maybe younger and more relatable to the younger followers, more able to travel etc

And more prone to being very vocal on rooting out the evils of the church wouldn't go amiss either.

I do agree. In a weird way I feel connected this time -

I was there when the white smoke came from the chimney (after seeing lots of black smoke).

I’m not religious but found myself in Malta when John Paul was holding an outdoor mass. The atmosphere of 150,000 people (IIRC) was amazing, and then we were invited to a street party where they closed the road, had a procession, music, dancing and food. The locals were wonderfully hospitable.

I can very much relate. I'm not religious but I was living not too far from Rome when we realised the Conclave would be occurring and decided that you don't get many opportunities to watch history being made - so went for it. The atmosphere was genuinely Godly - very hard to explain. But everyone was lovely.

I must have missed the study that found evidence for the efficacy of prayer.

I wonder if the UK (non-RC country) news will give (extremely excessive) wall-to-wall coverage to the death of this pope and the announcement of his successor as they did for JP2?

The Vatican do seem to be being unusually candid.

I assume that's not a good sign.

The Sistine Chapel rooms don't have enough gold for Trump's taste.

I don't wish ill of the Pope but I'm not religious. However, as his decisions can affect many I'd lean towards the next one not being too young and energetic. There's a usefulness to them having one foot in the grave already at the start of their term. Yes, a young energetic reformer might be interesting, but interesting isn't always good as your Trump analogy alludes to .
