There can be no good reason for uniformed policemen hiding their numbers. Sack them.

I agree, in these days of greater and greater state snooping & opression all under the guise of 'security' there has to be recourse against the misdeeds of those in power when they themselves break the law.

I would also like to propose a mandatory death sentence for any misconduct in a public office

Depends.

If they are beating eco warriors then that's fair enough.

Not on a day to day basis though.

It depends on the situation. In day to day policing fair enough. When it comes to policing 'protests' which are more like riots i'm not so sure. They have very tough job to keep order and they can be fairly sure their superiors won't stand by them if footage of media termed 'excessive force' hits the bulletins.

Please note I have no problem with peaceful protest. But it is not a basic 'human right' to trash a bank/Mac Donalds.

If they have done nothing wrong they will be fine.

But who is policing the police ?

We seem to be ruled by a lot of 'do as I say', and from recent press it seems the police are going the same way.

What next ?

Can someone enlighten me on this please?

Does every item of uniform have the numbers on them? Would the uniform underneath have the numbers on and he/she throws on a high vis jacket or riot vest and this obscures the numbers? Just wondering.... honestly!

I'd like to see reflective football strip size numbering on everything - front and back of jackets, sides of trousers, tops of hats, etc. - so that it's impossible for them to be accidentally lost or obscured.

That's a liiiiiitle extreme to my mind; sacking would do in most cases...

they should have numbers on display when doing that so that they can be singled out for praise.

Well, a serious misconduct issue like leading the country to war on the basis of a lie, or selling off our gold reserves, or fiddling the expenses then certainly.

Trashing the economy would be good enough for me.

Yes. Accountability is the most important thing for public servants to remember.

I find it slightly ironic that Police don't all want to be tarred with the same brush over the actions of a few of their colleagues whilst at the same time tarring (or more specifically "kettling") hundreds/thousands of protesters with the same brush over the actions of a few of their number.

Combine that with the fact that we the public are facing more and more snooping and infringements of civil liberties by the state all on the basis that "If you've nothing to hide you've nothing to fear" and I can't see why any officer who knowingly removes their identification should be considered fit to serve.

The bottom line is, as a public, would we prefer "trial by media" or Police Officers who are unaccountable for their actions because nobody knows who they are?

Absolutely agree, hiding numbers should be gross misconduct leading to automatic dismissal.

If I were a Home Office senior civil servant I would probably go further and say that it compromises national security whilst increasing terrorism by facilitating impersonation of a police officer. But that might be a bit much.
