So the Home Affairs committee has spoken. The leaks to Damien Green were not issues of National Security, but were embarrassing to Ministers and the Civil Service. This is the verdict delivered by the very, very partisan Keith Vaz, Chairman. What a surprise, just one more bunch of lies from the Home Office then. Vaz did add that they felt there was no ministerial involvement - what a sham. This is what happens when you have an "independent" labour chairman of a committee. I hope the next Govt revisits this whole issue, fires that berk Martin and his inept appointees. I guess it would be to much to hope for that Porno Smith gets hung, drawn and quartered.

I heard the slimy piece of st on the radio this morning. All he has done is blamed the civil service and exonerated ministers.

This is definitely one for the list of things to be investigated once the new government takes over.

No charges...

The Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer said that not only was the information in the public interest, but the contents were already widely known.

Agreed - those in the Labour party responsible must pay...

The government cannot "fire" Gorbals Mick. The speaker is "elected" for the full term of a parliament by his or her fellow MP's. In reality if the speaker wishes to continue he is always re-elected. An election only takes place when the speaker retires and has to be replaced by a new one.

Parliament is dissolved before the election, so the grasping, hopelessly biased Gorbals Mick gets kicked out.

Only if he wants to go. I would imagine he will probably retire at the next election anyway but in theory if he wants to carry on there would be no Labour or Tory opposition standing against him and he would resume his position in the new parliament. In his specific case, given the various controversies, one would assume that senior Labour figures would be whispering in his ear that it may be prudent to call it a day and go to the Lords after the election. If he came back and the will of parliament was to remove him against his will it would (AFAIK) be unprescedented.

No, when parliament is dissolved, the parliamentary term is at an end. Normally, the speaker is indeed reappointed, but there is no obligation.

Name one speaker who was removed from office.

From the UK Parliament website;

"An MP is elected to the role of Speaker by winning majority support in the Commons. This takes place after every general election or on the death or retirement of the previous Speaker. It is the practice for a Speaker to remain in office until retirement and to be automatically re-elected internally in all Parliaments after their original election."

The reality is if the speaker wants to remain in office after an election he does. In Micks case it would be interesting to see if the commons would collectively rebel against tradition but I wouldn't hold my breath. I doubt that he will continue anyway. A nice comfortable seat in the Lords and a fat pension awaits....

That is precisely what I said above. Hitherto, speakers have, despite partisan origins, been unpartisan in office and ave therefore been kept on. This one is different.

Hmmmm - had to restrain myself from punching the screen for two and a half minutes.

No apology, her department is not to blame, they did the right thing and it was necessary. Hi ho - sounds familiar...

According to the electoral calculus site, she's a no-hoper. They predict a Tory majority of 9000. She'll have to pay for her own bath plugs and porn for her husband, so she'd better start saving.

I understand they have "specialist" porn sites for those with a penchant for fatties. Maybe she could earn a coin or two by doing a turn with that thieving bd of a husband. The Tories should thank God for Labour politicians like Smith, Brown and the other sorry arsed bunch they call the cabinet. Every move they make increases the likelihood of a rout at the next election.

What a shambles. It amazes me that Keith Vaz is chair of this select committee. It doesn't seem that long ago that he left in disgrace - I can't remember now what the reason was, but he's hardly the moral compass (to paraphrase that prat Brown) he thinks he is.
