In June/July 2019 according to BBC

I think convention would dictate a Labour MP takes a turn (handy for the Conservatives, with a minority gov)

Is there a Labour MP that supports the Government, or do we not take turns with that bit?

Any MP can stand, so long as a dozen other MPs nominate them - there's then a vote. Boothroyd was the only 20th century speaker not to come from the ruling party, but they're meant to then become party-neutral.

The convention was broken back in 2000 when Michael Martin succeeded Betty Boothroyd but looking back through the list of previous Speakers it doesn't look like it was a particularly long standing tradition.

As did I, I had to check Wiki, which was interesting if only for this:

' A former hardline right-winger who changed his views after becoming an MP'

Bercow certainly got around as an MP, Lambeth / Motherwell / Bristol and a toss up between representing Buckingham or Surrey Heath are on his CV amongst other things.

I'm not sure many will miss him, many will say good riddance.

I thought he'd previously promised to have gone by last June?

Every day’s an education.

I personally don’t think he will last until then. Dame Laura’s report is damning of him.

I think he said when he took the job that he would only serve as long as his predecessor (9 years) which would have meant stepping down this year.

He must have conveniently forgotten.

He is actually the highest paid person in the Commons. Logically it should be the Prime Minister but for a piece of childish behaviour by Gordon Brown. In the run up to the 2010 election, David Cameron said that he would cut the salaries of Cabinet Ministers by 5%. However, in his last few days in Downing Street Gordon Brown secretly cut the PMs salary by 25% (£50k). This left Cameron faced with either earning no more than he had previously as Leader of the Opposition or having to go back on a manifesto pledge (of which Labour would have made a huge issue).

Like my knowledge of Bercow being lacking and having to look it up, I had to google Einion Yrth's description for Bercow.

I concur wholeheartedly with the quote below: wink

My next challenge is to use the word 'oleaginous' during a conversation or an email.

I like it, it's now topped my favourite word list, usurping 'Machiavellian'.

Cue expensive and unnecessary redecorating at the Speakers House all at the public expense.

Really?

Yes, spitting abuse as you're dragged away by two security guys is always such a tempting look.
