The Roman Empire
Discussion
Now here is a group of Politicians who thought that their way of life was a good one and if you didn't cut the mustard in their World then it was pretty much game over. Building apace, no worries about planning permission remember, plenty of land but if you run short there was plenty more to plunder. Lots of plebs to do hard graft and waiter services, poor service, no problem throw him/her to the lions. Debauchery, wine and drugs every day and night. Where Oh where did it all go so badly wrong, look at us now, like mice in a mouse wheel. I reckon that Italian P.M has the right idea.
Now you may ask what is the point of this drivel, I leave that to you.

Did the italians (now Called) ever apologise for enslaving us Brits.
Not in my time they haven't and its there that we hold the moral high ground, having apologised to half the bloody world, for us enslaving them. Jeeeez we have it so easy now with only a few trillion pounds debt to pay off, Aids, plundering of ever reducing World resources, Climate warming, and the extreme Rightwing views of a few P.H'ers. What can possibly go wrong crankedup said:

"Democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover they can vote themselves largess out of the public treasury." - Either the Scotsman Tytler or de Tocqueville. Not sure. That is probably the closest to an answer.
Others say it because their wine goblets were made from lead.

Slavery existed before the Roman occupation of Britain and after. That same slave trade continued after the Romans arrived, Britains in the majority were not slaves to Rome.I suppose they could still apologise though, I mean what did the Romans ever do for us?
