A 30-year-old man has been arrested after a video of him swallowing a live goldfish was posted on Facebook.
The footage showed Chris Caswell, a roofer from Newton Aycliffe, buying the goldfish in a pet shop for £1.99.
He told the person serving he lived across the road and convinced them to put the fish in a glass he had brought with him.
Mr Caswell proceeded to horrify the shopworker by swallowing the fish whole, while his friend filming the incident shouted: 'Goldfish down the hatch!'
The police were alerted after the video appeared on Facebook and
Mr Caswell was arrested on Friday on suspicion of animal cruelty.
He was released after being questioned for an hour and later told the Sun he had been drinking at the time of the incident.
'It was over a year ago. We had been out drinking at a friend's party. I can't remember much about it. I have just got a puppy. I like animals,' Mr Caswell claimed.
He must now wait to discover whether he will be charged with animal cruelty.
The video is the latest in a succession of apparent animal cruelty cases to hit the front pages, following the Mary Bale cat in a wheelie bin controversy and the cat dyed pink and thrown over a fence in Swindon

In cases like this, the police simply carry out an arrest at the request of another investigatory body; the rest of the investigation - i.e. interview and any gathering of evidence - is the domain of the RSPCA.
