Well HSBC have now changed the rules on sending a payment via internet banking.

What you have to do is call them up to give them the details of the account you want to send the money to!!

I thought that was called telephone banking!

Is there a more competent bank I could use as these lot are gradually making it harder and harder to operate a current account.

Don't worry, they don't just limit this service to private customers, business customers have equally as good care and attention. rolleyes

If it's any consolation, I don't think any other UK high street bank is much better.

I laughed down the phone at the man when he said you have to set up a payee on the telephone so you can use the internet payment system.

I have been with HSBC all my life, with business account and personal. Mainly due to the fantastic service my family have had and this just really is laughable.

You can do what you are trying to do with Lloyds TSB without having to phone them up!

I wouldn't recommend them though frown

Will they be bringing this in though?

Surely you should be given an option for internet banking, as internet banking.

Lloyds TSB have their own system - when you set up the new payee, you get an automated phone call to your mobile. You then type in the verification number to your phone and it veries automtically. Works very well!

Barclays is all done through the PINsentry machine. The others are trying to figure out something as secure, but less of a pain for the customer. At least with Barclays if you are paying a credit card bill, utility bill or other trustworthy recipient it skips PINsentry.

Oh Lord...my HSBC online banking is about to be "upgraded" I am waiting for the security "device" to be sent to me in the next couple of days. If this results in me having to phone then up to make a new payment I am going to go bananas.

Surely you should be given an option for internet banking, as internet banking.
LloydsTSB have just "upgraded" their internet banking.

Highlights include;

- Rather than being able to see all transactions back to 2002, you can have 3 months, that's it.

- Rather than have any say on the presentation of information, you get the latest transactions at the top of the screen. Thus if you have accounts with plenty of activity, you find yourself reading "up" the screen. It used to be down- as is logical...

Apart from that there are no advantages I can see, and when I filled in the questionnaire that popped up (to have a good rant) as a non-newbie I was not allowed to answer beyond the first question. I was not going to be pleasant.

It's not for all payments. Here's the message I got:

"We'd like to inform you of some new measures we're taking to further increase the security of Personal Internet Banking and to help prevent online fraud. These measures include changes to your terms and conditions concerning the limits for 'friends, family and others' payments. We have explained the changes in more detail below.

Currently, you can send up to a total of £10,000 per day from your account to your 'friends, family and others' beneficiaries.

To help with the security of Personal Internet Banking, if you haven't made any payments to a "friends, family and others" beneficiary from your account during a 13 month period, we may suspend your ability to make these types of payments through Personal Internet Banking. We'll tell you if this happens, and you'll still be able to call Telephone Banking or visit a branch to make the payment. Once you've made a 'friends, family and others' payment through Telephone Banking or through a branch, you'll then be able to make these types of payments through Personal Internet Banking.

'Pay a bill or organisation' payments are not affected by these changes.

Changes to your terms and conditions in detail

'Friends, family and others' payments are 'bill payments' in the terms and conditions. From 1 August 2010, the reference in the terms and conditions to the limit of £10,000 for bill payments made through Personal Internet Banking will be removed, and we will insert the following clause under the table in the terms and conditions that contains information about different payment types:

We may set limits on the payments you can make from your account via Personal Internet Banking. If we do, we will tell you the applicable limit when you make a payment.Your consent to making a payment will also be your agreement to the limit that applies to that payment.

I set up new payees on the internet all the time with HSBC. I have proper bank manager ... and I get to speak to people in the UK everytime I call. I don't know if it is different due to the premier service?

I set up new payees on the internet all the time with HSBC. I have proper bank manager ... and I get to speak to people in the UK everytime I call. I don't know if it is different due to the premier service?

That's the message I got so nothings really changed that and maybe the OP is not reading it properly.
It wasn't a case of reading.

The message flagged up

"Payment not Authorised please call"

So I called.

They said to add a new payee I have to phone to add, then can send to them.

I have now had to do this with 4 people so far.

COCO - I spoke to kirsty, my bank manager, I also have premier service. You aren't special anyone can have it if you have a couple of business accounts especially. She says she will look into it.

At present I think I will be closing the account and looking for an easier internet banking service to change to.
