Call me Mr Cynic but my gut feeling (and it's a pretty impressive gut!)is that OP was hoping the PH massive would sayYou're legally entitled to keep the money
The employer won't be able to recover it
Its the stupid lefty employers fault
You're also entitled to sue him for compensation and sleep with his 18 yo daughter / son / alsation (delete as appropriate)
PH unfortunately has suggested he pay it back and that anybody who doesn't is a bit scrote-y. OP has therefore gone away wondering whether or not he should chance it and hope Employer doesn't pick up on the error.

Note we ensure all mgrs are fully aware of any oddities with salary payments - and we always ask have they told you yet. If its someone who has poor behaviours and good /bad performance for some it could be the final nail in the coffin. Also for those which we expect to progress not being aware of personal finances OR not coming forward would raise questions.
Pay expenses easiest way to get rid of someone.
Hopefully OP who has not reappeared did the right thing IF not well he had the advice and took the chance
