My First Direct debit card expires at the end of this month.

Unfortunately, they don't use Royal Mail like any normal bank and use a private postal firm to send out the new cards. This private firm won't leave the cards without my signature, and will only deliver during working hours Monday to Friday. I cannot be at home during these hours and they won't post to my work address!
Of course that could be a good way to combat card theft..

During the chat that ensued, i mentioned that i needed the pin for a forthcoming trip abroad, at which point the call cenre chappie asked when i was going, when was i coming back, where was i going etc, requesting some fairly detailed information that i declined to give.

He then got his manager, who confirmed that Barclaycard now require you to contact them prior to travel & confirm dates & times/locations etc or here will be "an 80% chance that your card will be stopped if we see transactions abroad & you have not given us prior notice of your travel plans"

Anyone else slightly uncomfortable with this?
A problem for other posters who go abroad for extended periods it seems but if a card transaction comes in from some distant corner of the world and the card company have no idea you are out there what are they to think?

Slightly OT, but my credit card has recently changed hands (LLoyds sold to Barclaycard), so they issued a new card & pin etc.
Anyway, after etching the new pin into my memory, i i then forgot the new pin & had to call Barclaycard for a new one to be issued.

HSBC told me that whenever I go abroad, which I do for six months of the year, I need to tell them exact dates, so my card won't be stopped.

They did freeze my debit card because someone had cloned my card and tried to withdraw money in Philadelphia airport. It was me, using my own card, but they seem to have a problem understanding that, even though I have told them three times. They never billed me for the $100 I withdrew, and assured me they had stopped the transaction before the money was stolen, and I have never seen it on my statement to this day.

I travel quite a lot, and carry a range of cards in case of problems, but (touch wood) have never had one. I've never called my bank or card company before travelling.

It always amazes me that I can suddenly spend serveal thousand dollars in the US and no-one queries it. In the US they generally just swipe the card and then you sign - they don't even look at the sig. I wonder if, using a UK card in the US, can they really tell in real-time if the card is valid or not?

Another one to watch out for is the range of wireless card terminals.

I’m sitting at the table of a restaurant and ask for the bill. We were there early and my wife has selected a table by the window with a view, far from the bar. The waiter brings a wireless card reader to the table. So I enter my pin and after a long delay it declines the transaction, despite me knowing funds were available.

The waiter makes it very public that my card has been declined and all the surrounding tables notice, much to the embarrassment of my party. I don’t expect to pay £60 a head for food plus drinks only to have it ruined by being publicly humiliated, no matter how good it is (and it is good food there).

So I go to the bar and we try again. It turns out that radio range of the wireless reader was insufficient to reach our table reliably. The system automatically declines in these circumstances. Once within range the system processed my payment without trouble.

So I insisted the manager return to the table and publicly announce to the surrounding tables what had happened, and that it would be necessary for customers to go to the bar to make payment.

At their prices, they can afford better equipment, or at least know that it doesn't work in all areas.

I still haven't been back.

Good way to combat me being able to use the card, too! Whats wrong with Royal Mail signed for? I could then pop down to the sorting office (10 min walk) at my convenience.

I simply can't believe that's correct. Think about it - most of the ordinary working population wouldn't be able to get their cards.

They should allow for some give and take with new cards that are issued if it expires end of said month it should still be operational til then!! I also remember i withdrew some cash from a ATM abroad with my debit card, i got a call within 30 minutes asking if i was abroad etc etc. Also my credit card co. did the same after id used it abroad. I tend to call them to say if im going to be away now to be honest. I know someone who was called by their C.C Co. to ask if they were using their card in a casino which they werent, some FcensoredR had got their details and were using it! Its your hard earned at the end of the day, i personally dont have a problem if they request these kind of details.

Seems right to me, my bank tried it a few years ago. Turns out it's not such a great idea (no st!) and now they're back to using Royal Mail.

That would probably amount to naming and shaming.

I doubt you would use it since you and I don’t live near each other. However, it has been voted “best restaurant in Kent.”

In fairness, if it isn’t the best restaurant in Kent, I’ve yet to find a better one. The Chateaubriand and the desert trolley deserve special attention.

Maybe they do it if you live in a dodgy area, or in a flat or soemthing?

I've had both new credit and debit cards recently and both were just by disguised mail.. I know they rotate delivery methods at random, just unlucky in your case I suppose although I was given option of collecting from branch a while back

This happened to me once. when my ex2b moved out and got a new home they automatically moved me with him without even checking. he got my bank statements and other personal stuff del. to his new address. bearing in mind we had to go to court to sort out our finances etc. this went on for months. i had a payment delclined and called the bank they asked for my address and i gave it and they said nope doesnt match the address on our files. and refused to make the payment. How embarassing.
in the end after 6y weeks of messing about i threatened them with the ombudsman and they offered me £200.00
