High Wycombe? That's interesting, I know 3 people who all bank with this bank and have all had money taken from their accounts which was taken out from a branch in high Wycombe! Coincidence?

I know what you mean, but it really depends who you get. At home the lad in there is quiet young, maybe 25/27ish and couldnt do enough for you. He knows me and my parents by name and is fantastic. The ones at uni were shocking and a complete pain in the arse when I lost my bank card. Who would have thought that I couldnt access my own account even with a driving licence, passport and uni card. "You must have something to prove you own the account sir".... um.. what like my FACE!?

First things first, phone the branch and arrange an appointment with the manager of the local branch(High Wymcombe seems to be 05511430140 or 0845 7654321). Don't say be too specific what it is about. I doubt be able to walk into a Santander branch and see the manager straight away.

Bring ID(passport of Driver's License), proof of address(bill dated within 1 or 2 months if possible), proof of the account(ie statement, certificate of investment and/or). Also bring proof that you were out of the country if possible.

Go in quietly but firmly. Explain the situation. State that you gave no authorization for the account to be closed but that you do understand that accounts can be closed in error.

Ask:

Who authorised the closure?(request to see the closure form if necessary)
Where have the fund gone?

State that, as you never wanted the account to be closed, that they should reopen it with the full balance with any interest lost on the time. Ask if they are willing to demonstrate any good will gesture as an apology. Make it VERY clear that you are making an official complaint and you expect it to be sorted it out within a day or two.

A worthwhile thing to mention if they start kicking up fuss is a column in the Sunday Post I think it is, apparently they will fight for you and are very successful. A customer of mine had problems with an ISA transfer and they meddled about until the column got involved..then it was sorted within a week hehe

Don't go in shouting and kicking up a fuss though...the likelihood is whoever you spoke to was not directly responsible and, if you can get them on your side, they could help you considerably. I will go far out of my way to help anyone that I see with a genuine problem that does not come in aggressively.

I wish I could help you out directly but I don't work for them(fortunately wink).

Fire away questions if you want and I can see if I can answer them.

Hope some of that helps.

In fairness if you didn't produce anything relating to the account like a statement or cheque book I wouldn't expect them to give you any money. How does your face prove it's your account?

You could prove the account was your easily from the information he says he has provided. His signature should be on file too. Therefore if the ID was genuine and his signature matched he should be able to access his money. The cashier was being a tit.

Because I had 2 forms of photographic ID which will satisfy government agencies, border control, the plod etc, yet wont satisfy some 20 year old girl in a bank. I even gave her my account number and it wasnt enough.

Natwest on the other hand were brilliant.

So 'a' Fred Bloggs turns up, says it's his account but has no bank paperwork and they hand over the money then 'the' Fred Bloggs (you) appears, finds his account emptied and blames the bank.

I hate banks but sometimes customers don't help themselves.

Edit: NatWest can be good but only if they've got you marked as someone who writes to the bank chairman when they fk up. Yields better results than yelling at a 20-year old teller.

I'm struggling to see how it can be anyone but the bank's fault from the above?

I have to echo the comments of others though, they are a shower of st. Took them 6 months to complete an ISA transfer which should have taken a couple of weeks (admittedly due to my lack of chasing), and their online facilities never seem to work. If you phone up to complain they will "take your details and (never) call back".

Exactly why I am closing a number of accounts with this phuckup organisation.

Countless mistakes from sending visa cards to the wrong address (their fault) sending statements to Scotland to some random bloke with the same sirname (their mistake) blah blah.

Sure they offer good interest rates and offer to pay you £100 to switch accounts. But ask yourself why!
3 months later you will be switching back to your old bank.

I can not think of a bigger more crap phucking shiit mess of an organisation than Shiitander. Hopefully they get nationalised and broken up.

According to FSA guidelines they have 30 working days. You should not have to chase either. But they are guidelines and I think that is why banks get off with taking longer. Some banks will compensate you on interest lost but you would have to chase hard.

I noticed that advert the other day - 5.00% gross. But this is what I understand of it; that is only paid out on the first £2,500 in the account, any additional funds get no interest, you have to abide by the 'pay in conditions' or loose the interest and finally the interest rate reverts to a lower rate after a set term. Doesn't sound too good to me and so much for making things simpler.

Is this a Fred Bloggs who has photographic ID with the same name as the account name on it, and looks exactly like the photo ID and the account holder?

Yup. Dodgy driving licences are about £20 I understand.

Nyphur. Do you by any chance post on moneysavingexpert.com? Lots of people there complaining about Scumtander losing their ISA's.
