Chase Bank - Anyone here have an account?
Discussion
We’ve heard about scam calls purportedly from the bank. About an hour ago I received a call from someone claiming to be from Chase. He had my name, account number, telephone number and home address. He claimed that he’d stopped some suspicious payments on my account. As I wouldn’t give him any more information he said he’d have to put the bogus payments through. That last comment confirmed the scam.
For me it was obviously a scam but I can understand how some are taken in. Anyway I phoned Chase when I got home and dealing with this was really easy. As there’s no number physically on the card I was able to change it on the app.
Be careful out there.

I’m surprised (and a bit worried) that they’ve not got this fixed yet. I just tried to make an online purchase from John Lewis and Chase declined the transaction. I retried using Paypal (which is linked to my Chase card) and it went through fine.
I assume in person transactions using the card are unaffected? I’ve had no problems with these.

The Mastercard ID Check worked today; I had a pop-up asking me to approve a payment for c.£279 to a company called 'Airtasker' who I've never heard of. Declined it and froze the card, then got new card details instantly.
According to Chase the company had been added as a 'token' which I think means they'd saved the card details for future transactions? I have a couple of sites where the card no. is saved (eg. Amazon, JustEat etc) and Chase said that when those companies try to take a payment in future against the old card no. it should in theory update them... Surely that would mean that as Airtasker was also added as a 'token' there's a possibilty the fraud could continue against the new card number that being the case?
I got Chase to delete the token which I believe prevents any transactions going forward. It's not something we as customers can see or check so it does seem to suggest it's important to call them in the event of a fraudulent transaction even if the transaction didn't go through.

Heads-up: I had a call tonight on a 'Private Number' - the caller asked for me by full name. I didn't confirm (never do) but answered with the question, "Who's calling?". The guy gave a name and said he was calling from Chase fraud protection - I said I was ending the call and would call Chase on the number on their site to which he asked "...why I felt that way.." which absolutely confirmed he was a scammer. As we know, any call from someone legit at a bank would have no issue with a customer ending the call and ringing back in.
I called Chase directly via the app and - quelle surprise - no calls to me from them and no suspicious activity on my account. What it means is that somehow my name, phone number and the fact I have a Chase account have been leaked to scammers. Hopefully the fact I shut the scammer down without actually confirming anything gets me taken off their call rotation as someone who won't fall for a scam call and is therefore a waste of time.
I'd advise anyone with Chase to be on guard and if you get such a call to just hang up and call them via the app to confirm.
I must admit I am concerned about how that information about me has fallen into the hands of scammers, particularly in light of the actual fraud attempt I mentioned a couple of posts up that occurred last month. I simply can't think of anywhere that combination of data about me (full name, mobile no. and the fact I bank with Chase) exists other than inside Chase themselves and therefore it's crossed my mind that there could potentially be an issue with their internal security.
I'm considering whether to move my savings out of Chase to somewhere like Marcus, ditch Chase and revert to using my old bank account for daily spending.

I had a very similar call with a similar outcome. They could have just struck lucky, call enough people and someone will have a Chase account.
I could swear I’ve had calls in the dim and distant past quoting my name and saying your ‘x’ account has an issue when I don’t even have an account with ‘x’!!
I did consider that, and the human brain is very good at seeing correlation where perhaps there isn't any - however I've never had a single other call along those lines about another bank. This appeared targeted rather than a random bit of luck. I could swear I’ve had calls in the dim and distant past quoting my name and saying your ‘x’ account has an issue when I don’t even have an account with ‘x’!!
Chase is also not that widely used in the UK compared to all the established traditional banks (and even amongst the digital challenger banks it's still an outlier really). I called Chase again today and said I'm concerned that it appears a combination of data only they have in their possession may have been compromised and used to target me for a scam - at least it's now logged officially I guess.
