I also wonder how peoples view of going to work changes when the main outgoing you go to work for disappears.

I realise that doing the 9-5 makes the money pile bigger but if that 9-5 is dull is there still the motivation to do it.

For me it was allowing me to not worry about working 9-5 anymore.

I left full time work, started working a 3-4 day week contracting. Then started at looking at earning from doing something I enjoyed. In addition I have more leisure time to enjoy those things that money can buy and the things it can't like visiting far flung friends and family.

But I'm sure we are all different.

We're all probably more similar than you think. Despite no mortgage, there's still plenty out there to occupy the cash if you have an addiction to nice cars, watches, restaurants and holidays and of course being able to treat those around you without a second thought.
