I knew my lax filing would bite me in the bum at some point.

My (potential) new employer wants up to 10 years worth of self assessment statements as part of my pre-employment screening. I can't find them. Haven't been self employed for nearly 5 years.

Is there any chance that the tax office might be able to supply me with copies in the next couple of weeks (or at all)? rolleyes

What an odd thing to ask for.

The vast bulk of self assessment tax returns do not generate "Self Assessment" statements as such as the whole point of the system is that the taxpayer (or his agent) compute the tax liabilities themselves and informs HMRC (that's why it's called Self Assessment).

The one thing a Self Assessment taxpayer will normally get is the "Self Assessment Payment on Account" statement. Is this what he is asking for?

Ten years also seems to be a very long time to cover by such a request, especially when the legal requirement for retaining tax paperwork is six years from the end of the tax year end date. If you have been out of Self Assessment for five or six years, at the most, you would only legally be required tio have the last two that you received at the most.

I would ask him why he wants this and would some other alternative paperwork be sufficient - especially as HMRC may never have issued the type of thing he is asking for.

Thanks for the quick reply Eric.

I'm assuming it's for the statement of payment on account that they mean. (I was at one point told they were after P61s or P62s!)

Basically I have to prove that I used to be self employed up till the 2006/07 tax year (I was also employed at the same time and they have a reference for that already!). I have my own electronic copies of the tax returns themselves watermarked "not submitted" and submission receipts printed off from the online Government Gateway service (which I can't log into any more as I don't appear to have a current password). I have one year's worth of the blue and white "Self Assessment Statement" telling me what I owe in tax and have lost/destroyed the rest inadvertently. I didn't use an accountant. I have offered bank statements and invoices with my trading name on, but these have been declined.

The odd thing is that they are asking for something that is so old you had no legal requirement to keep it. Why do they feel the need to go back so far?

Don't ask me.

Well, you should ask them. And then explain to them the legal situation - that you were under no legal obligation to keep paperwork going back that far.

I have explained that to the HR people. It now looks like business bank statements will suffice after all, but it's all a bit silly to be honest.
