Hi,

I applied for a student account earlier on today and was refused as she said there was some adverse data on my credit file.

I looked at my credit report and there is a CCJ in 2011 on my file, but it clearly says my Dad's name (only one letter difference). He knows about it and has settled it. Equifax have said that I need to send a letter to the court for them to correct it, but it clearly isn't mine.

The problem is that just yesterday I sent off my career development loan form and I have no chance of getting it with this on my file. Who is responsible for removing it? Has the court done it wrong? Or have Equifax put this on my file? Who do I need to contact? I have CCJ settlement form, clearly in my Dad's name.

Equifax only report the information they are told. You need to go back to the source of the CCJ to sort this out....clarify the situation with them, get it in writing.......forward to equifax....

My thought too - but if the CCJ states 'NR123's Dad', who made the mistake in applying it to the son?

Who knows, but you have to start at the source and work backwards.... that issued the CCJ.

Get confirmation that the CCJ was meant for the Dad.

Take confirmation to the court.

Get court to acknowledge that it was given to the wrong person.

Then speak to the credit reference agencies with your above proof.

People make the mistake of chasing Equifax about mistakes on their credit file, when the mistake is with whoever registered it, company's like Equifax just reflect the information given to them...

Many thanks for the responses. Just to follow up on this, I rang both the County Court and the Registry Trust (the office that issues the CCJs) and they stated that the public register has the correct information, so I should contact Equifax to remove it. I have done this and it should be removed with two days.

I have also done a credit report with Experian and the CCJ is not on their report, so I guess it is Equifax's fault. Also my credit score with Experian is unusually high, not sure but it shouldn't hinder me.

Any ideas why my bank wouldn't let me switch to a student account? There is clearly no adverse data on my credit report as she presumed.

You mustn't have passed their internal scoring system.....
