Buy high, sell low, lunch is for wimps etc...

A quick heads up for anyone who doesn't venture over to the share tips thread in finance. We have organised a little competition to see how much each of us can win (or lose) before the market closes for Christmas. The competition is free to enter and play and the prize is nothing other than bragging rights.

The competition is in the form of a fantasy share league playing against other PH'rs. To play you will need to sign up to http://www.lse.co.uk (free and quick and easy).

Then direct yourself over to http://game.lse.co.uk/join-game.asp

Gamename: PHsharetipthread
Password: whotippedgkn

Your starting cash is £10k
Stamp duty will be charged on each buy for a bit of realism
Commission is £5 per trade (again for realism)

So what are you waiting for - get cracking and join in, the more the merrier. Winner is the PH'r with the most in his/her account at the sound of the bell on the 24th.

You are encouraged to shout about your gains and cry over your losses here too.

Good luck thumbup

£236.30 down so far. Not a bad days work hehe

Should be interesting to see how we end up. I imagine attitudes to risk will change a bit playing with faux money.

market just closed and I am £5.37 down today frown
Not bad going. I'm -£247.45. laugh

Don't know how to play this. Temptation is to go fast and loose due to time constraints. Chances are though it will lead to one mistake after another and the guy who plays it safe and just buys £10k RMG will trounce us all. Either that or someone will drop on and multibag with an AIM share.

I guess the game must run a bit behind reality, because the value of my portfolio is still moving. I am currently £20.56 down.
Not sure on the game delay. Same thing happens for real though. Late trades go through after the bell.

Can you short stuff on this?
Unfortunately not, just regular dealing. Nothing stopping us setting up a spread bet type thing later on though if people are up for it.

Good luck thumbup Quite a few seem up for it so should be a giggle smile

Why does it do this more often than not in December? Traders got that festive feeling?
In the most simple of ways to some extent yes. A general feeling of positivity, Christmas bonuses, bears away from their desks to get away from the festivities.

All anecdotal but it sort of has a snowball effect. Everyone hopes there will be a rally and invests (financially and thus in the idea) and the positivity gets infectious.

Doesn't always happen though. If however you're ever going to take a bet on the FTSE, this is historically a very good time to do it.

hehe You're a true hero K. Just think. If you'd stayed in bed all day only answering the door to hookers, coke dealers and dominoes you'd be richer than you are having spent a day at work.

Can I assume that the difference between the portfolio value and 10k +/- the profit/loss is the fees and stamp duty?
Otherwise it doesn't add up!
You are charged £5 per trade (£5 to buy, £5 to sell)
You pay stamp duty on the purchase side only (0.5%)

I'm not sure whether the value of your portfolio is valued at the mid price or the sell price. Will have a look..

Don't know if you guys have already implemented this but these thing tend to function better if a limit is placed on how much is in one single holding i.e. 20%

Stops the thing being undermined by a shot in the dark and introduces more skill.
Good idea, don't know if that can be implemented in LSE (or once the game has started?). Definitely something to consider for future games (if people still want to play).

This is just meant as a bit of seasonal fun and hopefully it will get those who had no interest interested and help those who do trade a bit an opportunity to try out different trading strategies and perhaps reassess their attitude to risk. Once the winner snaps his braces and drives off in his 964 Turbo and the loser has the gun in his mouth we can perhaps debrief and discuss what we'd all like to keep and what we'd like to change?

I think in retrospect I would have perhaps ditched the trading fee and stamp duty to encourage more actual trading. Those costs, although real, tend to stifle things a bit. We give enough to the government in real life, no need to tax our fun just yet.

In the meantime, should someone pull a ten bagger out of thin air more power to them!
