As title, lucky enough to now have 30 grand to invest and I need some (sensible-ish) ideas.

Will consider sharedealing/trading to property to a very small (eg Ebay) business.

I will have evenings and weekends free.

I like the idea of a buy to let holiday home, somewhere with a growing property market would be nice smile

How long are you planning to invest this cash for?
Depends on the return! I suppose I would like to be enjoying some of the return within 10 years...

re trading, just chuck the money away now, to be honest.

Re holiday homes: holiday chalets (fancy static caravans) might be an idea, but I suspect that the recent increase in Staycations in the UK may have made these over valued.

To be brutal, if you have a mortgage then I would just put it there until the time comes that you have the perfect business concept.

It is always better to start with the business idea and then get the money than get the money then try and find an idea.
Wise words.

Property is a safe bet obviously, and the benefit of a holiday home is that you can use it if you have a free slot! As DonkeyApple mentions, if you have any borrowing, simply reduce it..that would be my advice also.

Boring maybe, sensible definitely.
I know, sensible words, I appreciate that. But was hoping for greater return than what I could save on mortgage.

Yep, I know, dangerous territory here.

I have a friend who consistently makes good money spread betting (whole discussion in itself!) doing this.

Would start small and extremely cautiously, with advice from said friend.

Would like a 993, but not sure its a great investment when you consider the up-keep that a good one would deserve.

Well, you'd need a bit more money for this, but what about Property Investment Franchise?

Check out Platinum Property Partners, they have a property franchise that you invest in--pretty much, you invest some money, they use it to purchase by to let houses. It's a passive investment, so they do the searching, securing, refurbishing and managing. You just invest money, approve the properties that they are thinking of adding to your portfolio and sit back while your pockets fill. smile

good luck!
Good luck indeed
A friend of a friend (I know!) has just invested a large chunk of money in a pre build holiday apartment. Think he said it was in the caribbean.? The sort of scheme where you put your money down before its built.

Anyone know anything about these companies? Any good ones?

Anyone remember a company called 'Inside Track'? I do, and would suggest having a quick read of their history to anyone tempted to go with a Property Management / Dev company....
But are they all bad?

Major changes in the Capital Gains Tax on holiday homes are in the offing so make sure you are aware of this before making any plans in that direction.
When's this coming in?

How will they find you? smile

Out of genuine interest, why do you say this?
2 decades of doing this for a living.

No one ever evaluates the risk and so is guaranteed to fail.

You only have to look at any share sublect on the internet and all people are talking about is small caps, miners and internet crap. If they wanted to trade or invest for positive returns they would be looking at less glamourous markets but they don't they want to gamble. And all gamblers lose except for a very small few who get lucky and their story is then bandied around as if it is the norm to perpetuate the steady influx of new gamblers throwing their money away. biggrin
So you don't necessarily have to through your money out the window if you do your homework properly? wink

But just like homework, most people copy it or get someone esle to do it for them.
Who did you copy yours from? Can I have a look? smile
