I dropped into a large B&Q this morning looking for a small oil-filled radiator, the kind used mainly for frost protection in sheds etc. No rockets, no science, just a radiator. About £25. How hard can it be?

I couldn't find it on my first scout so I approached a pleasant 'orange tabarder'. She sent me up to the fire and fireplace department. Went up there and had a look - lots of fires and fireplaces but no oil-filled radiators. Made my way back towards the checkouts to find another orange tabarder. His brow ridge deepened and he swiftly passed me on to another orange tabarder heading inbound. We met halfway and I reiterated my desire for a small oil-filled radiator, the kind that plug into the mains, the kind used mainly for frost protection in sheds.

Tabarder 3 dutifully led me to the central heating department and pointed at the big rack of central heating radiators. 'No, these are for central heating' I said. 'I want a small oil-filled radiator, you know, the kind that plug into the mains, the kind used mainly for frost protection in sheds'. 'Well these plug into the mains via the water' he said. By this time I realise I'm dealing with an idiot. 'Plugging something into the mains via water doesn't seem very safe to me' I ventured teasingly... but it was clear he'd exceeded his ability so I thanked him politely and sauntered off towards the garden department. They weren't there either, but on the way back I walked past a big display of oil-filled radiators smile

I think they are a "seasonal" item and are kept separately.

TBH I have never found the B&Q product/aisle strategy to be intuitive, eg. tapes/glue are in the decorating aisle, I would expect it to be with tools/hardware.

Sounds like the usual sub standard Sunday staffing issue that affects many retail outlets. I worked evenings and Sundays at Texas Homecare as a 16 year old, had no training, yet was constantly asked all sorts of questions by customers.

Do not buy anything bathroom related from B&Q....be warned! I fit bathrooms for a living and will walk away from a customer who wants to supply me with a B&Q bathroom to fit. If they havent already bought then Ill point them in the right direction!

What exactly is the problem? Is it the quality of the bathrooms or the company. I believe they sell from the same catalogue as a few other bathroom retailers.

What? We fit B & Q bathrooms in a lot of properties, we buy when the sale offers are on, had some great buys over the years.

So you wanted an electric radiator, but you asked for something used in sheds that plug into the mains, and confused the issue further by talking about oil?

Well, they're called 'oil-filled radiators' - if you put 'oil-filled' into the search box on their wesbite you get the exact products: http://search.diy.com/search#w=oil-filled%20&a...

The power source and likely application was added subsequently in a fruitless attempt to communicate. I even used my hands and arms to indicate approximate dimensions. Short of showing them big photographs of oil-filled radiators there was little more I could do - and even that may not have worked.

I'll plug it into the water and see what happens nuts

I rarely go to B& Q - There's usually a nearby Screwfix, which, as they're owned by B&Q, generally sells the same stuff and then more too. And they're usually cheaper.

here here, i installed a bath (granted it was cheap at £85) from B&POO and i stood in it to tile where the shower head would be going and my foot went right through it. The plastic must have been about 2mm thick down near the plug hole.

Suprisingly certain Ebay sellers have some of the best bathroom products about, and at very cheap prices too.

I'd probably have gone to Currys instead.
