Basingstoke - surrounding villages
Discussion
Can folk please recommend areas around Basingstoke that should be avoided and those which are desirable - (for Basingstoke!)
Friend is planning on moving there to be able to commute to Southampton for work but still not be too far from London either (renting a flat initially). Just needs to be sure he doesn't end up in Chavurbia.
Many thanks.

Places to avoid
South Ham - most of it
Popley - Popley 1,2,3 and 4
Brighton Hill - all of it
Buckskin - all of it and I'll add 'avoid like the plague'
Also avoid the yellow block of flats next to the railway station, and the development on the hill in close proximity to the railway station. Have heard that prostitution and drug dealing are rife in flats, and property is regularly vandalised.
Generally much nicer areas are
Chineham
Old Basing
Hatch Warren and the smaller villages around the outskirts such as Sherborne St John etc
Good luck!

Do you know what 'Beggarwood' is like? And Sherfield-on-Loddon?

Beggarwood is ok being next door to Hatch Warren. TBH honest I avoided looking in this area as there are lots of teenagers which could mean there is potential for future chaviness, and the place feels very densely populated with loads of houses on a small area.
Sherfield is essentially a sleepy village on the northern outskirts of the town. If I had the choice I would live here, as you have access to Basingstoke and Reading as well as both the M3 (10 minutes) and the M4 (15 minutes). Although prices here are higher as it is a 'nice' place to live

I was born in Sherfield-on-Loddon. Lovely place, and some great pubs in the area.
However, if your friends are commuting to Southampton, the A33 has become a pig since I left the area, then you have to negotiate th ringroad. I'd be looking on the west-side of Basingstoke, maybe Dummer or another village on that side.

But Winklebury is ok presumably, strange as it is the only area out of all those where the police imposed a curfew. Not sure if it's still in place though.South Ham - most of it

I wouldn't want to live in Chineham.

Sherfield is nice, really quite sleepy - same can be said for Mortimer and Bramley. Tadley is much bigger, and offers a few amenities as a result. Mortimer and Bramley benefit from stations, however.
There was quite a long thread recently...
Tadley must have improved, when I was growing up it was at least on a par with Oakridge etc. There was quite a long thread recently...
What is his budget ?
There are some lovely villages around Basingstoke but they are expensive.
As has been suggested Dummer is probably the best location wise for him.
He may well find that it would take the same time to get from Hook or Odiham as it would be to navigate around the ring road, especially in rush hour.

Has he considered Overton? It's a decent size village, good shops, nice range of housing styles and sizes, and an easy hop onto the A34 and south to Southampton. Also closer to Winchester which is a far nicer town than Basingstoke.
Whitchurch also an option, but folks there have 6 fingers on each hand
as mentioned above, he really needs to be on the South-West side of Basingrad - getting onto the ring road/A33/M3 at J6 in the mornings is complete murder.

What's wrong with Buckskin out of curiosity? I looked at a nice 3 bedroom detached there. garage and driveway. Wasn't a slum price but wasn't extortionate either. I drove around the area a few times and it was really quiet. Didn't hear a thing or see a soul. We didn't buy for other reasons but to an outsider it looked like a nice road/area. Lots of greenery. Buckskin - all of it and I'll add 'avoid like the plague'

Lots of history of being a st-hole council estate in the 70's & 80's. May have changed, but hard to shake an image if it has.
But back in the day, Buckskin was one of the better estates.Oakridge and Popley were probably the worst, to add to it they had continual gang fights between the two.
Just asking. I'm always curious. As an outsider sometimes I just take things on face value. My view being if I've never heard about it in the quiet parts of Surrey then it can't be that bad. The only two places I'd ever heard of in a bad way were Popley and Brighton Hill.
Popley unfortunately actually looks like st as well as having a rep.

Wasn't the pub in Buckskin forced to close down, because of all the trouble there?
Then again the one in Brighton hill became an asda, a much worse fate.

Not sure about right now, but certainly a few years ago Winklebury was easily the worst.
But it changes over time.
Growing up I lived near Winklebury but went to school on Popley, at that time Oakridge (which they appear to gradually replacing) and Popley were the worst.
