I've got a tap in my utility room but want to tee off pipework to put a tap on the outside wall. The problem is, it's an old stone built barn conversion with two feet thick walls.

Any ideas?

I’d use a power tool for that. It’ll take ages with a hand drill.

Do a 7mm hole first using the above, then a 20mm bit from each side of the wall?

Can I rent one? The SDS drill, I don't mind buying the bit!

Yes, a few places do them.

Don’t try to save money using a lower spec one than you need.

I've never come across a 24 inch tap before, must be massive!

No, I'd spend decent wedge to get a good one. Same with the drill bits.

I'd only need to rent it for a day.

Thanks chaps. That was nice and straightforward!

Do remember not to break either (or both) of your wrists.

I think the 24 inches refers to the thickness of the wall the OP wants to get a 15mm pipe through…..,,

If it’s a stone wall it may have a rubble infill which will block back up as you pull the drill out. Make sure you push the pipe through from the other side as you draw the drill back.

Either that or he's going to attach a fire hydrant on to the wall. biglaugh

Drilled several similar holes through our thick stone walls last year. Main challenge I found was getting the angle of the drill level. Otherwise you end up going off course. Not sure of the best solution other than be careful.

At the point you’re hiring a drill and buying a bit, isn’t the best approach a post on your local Facebook group seeking a plumber who will do it on his way home for a good drink?

You can buy them relatively cheaply, and they're brilliant tools. I think I paid £30 for my first one and used it to break up a concrete footpath!

Not drilled such a long hole myself (ooo-err), but this sounds like a good tip. The voice of experience;)

My mrs shows me posts like that, people asking for people to do a “ little job “ for them for beer money.
Like most tradesmen we all just sit around waiting for someone to ask us to a job because we love our work so much we all work for free.
But anyway, as has been said, a good sds drill and good quality drill bits.

I'd think about sleeving the hole with the next size pipe up, although it means drilling a bigger hole of course.
