amazing what you can get up north for peanuts.
I appreciate your post is deliberately provocative but I really don't see much variation in house prices North - South once London is removed from the equation.

London's bubble and the slight weighting ripple that permeates to anywhere within, say, 1.5 hours commute is an anomaly that skews the figures. Remove that bubble and there is very little between it in my opinion. Having lived in Hampshire, Northamptonshire and Yorkshire, prices are all broadly the same. The only slightly noticeable cheaper area was the Midlands, where an absence of decent jobs/salaries/cities meant a deflated housing market.

Well said. It's patronising and dismissive and to say that house is peanuts is frankly ridiculous. In many parts of the South East that kind of money would get you something very similar.

Will be a gift for someone, far too overlooked for security reasons.

He has his place Grove House in Regents Park and his estate up North

Presumeably for sale as a result of this:
http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/news/uk/crime/articl...

Times article said:
Sabina Carter, 50, fell out with the other residents of Westwood House, a mansion near Droitwich in Worcestershire, after being declared bankrupt in 2010. In the midst of the court battle that followed, she wrote an obscene e-mail to the chairwoman of the residents’ association in November. It was compared by her own lawyer to the writing of a 15-year-old.

...

She bought the flat, which has 24ft-high ceilings, for £237,000 in 1999, and spent thousands on its restoration. As running costs rose, she put the apartment on the market for £1.25 million, buying another flat in the mansion. Unable to sell it, Carter remortgaged the property until she was made bankrupt.
