Took about 2hrs in total. Weather was pretty windy which isn’t ideal. Glyphosate applied by sprayer, and roped the father in law into holding a large piece of cardboard to protect the borders from overspray.
Not certain if the matting will help or not in killing it but I feel better that my 2 cats are less likely to eat it.

I’ll give it 7-10 days then check on progress!

My first thought was that you’d gone mad and were protecting your lawn from C19!!

The forecast is fine for tomorrow. The mowers are cleaned and fueled. My grass is like a hayfield. First cut ahoy ! driving(me on my ride-on).

That's my understanding.

Mid-late April is about right, air temp above 13deg? So only a few weeks.

Obviously you don't want to waste the seed, so you're trying to pick a time when it will germinate and the grow well. Warm enough the cold won't get it, without being too try and typically the areas are impractical to water well.

Raking it out too early leaves an unsightly lawn and risks weeds taking hold.

Daniel
Raked and scarified mine yesterday let's see how that turns out.

I'm part of the 2020 club now biggrin , first mow today.

Well, it was less "cut the grass", as "mow over the moss" rolleyes

Some serious sorting out to do over the next month or so, scarifying, reseeding etc.

Looks soooo much better though, even with just a light cut clap

I now deserve a drink

Me too. Good old petrol lawnmower started 2nd pull too. I might even check the oil if I get really bored.

I hate to say I have neglected my garden for a few years (working in the house) so with the current measures in place thought it would be a good place to learn more and get the garden right.

I gave it a good cut about a week ago.

However its full of the below...

Are these just weeds? would a weedkiller get rid of them.

Once they are gone I plan to mix up some topsoil with seeds and gently brush over the lawn as there are a few small holes. I had turf laid before and now its settled you can see some un-evenness.

Literally no experience before with gardening, appreciate any advice smile

I'm certainly no lawn connoisseur, I only have about 40sqm in a rectangle. However was giving it it's first cut yesterday and noticed it was a little patchy in places, probably due to the dog weeing on it and a bit of it being shaded.

Gave it a box of lawn feed, the pellet type and watered it, thinking no more of it.

Que later in the day I see the dog licking the grass, he'd paid close attention to the box, obviously likes the smell. Apparently it's safe for kids and animals but I guess they're not supposed to actually eat it.

He seems fine so far rolleyes but what an idiot.

Yes you need a lawn weed killer. Get onto YouTube and watch a couple of the lawnsmith videos, should teach you all you need to know.

Was planning on giving the front and back its first cut of the year but my neighbour beat me to the front. Sadly.

I guess the kids could play hop-scotch on it or perhaps full size chess!

It's a mess isn't it?! I threw some seed on it and I hope that's going to work.

For comparison, here's the back after I cut it...

Is this any good for killing moss before scarifying?

Also, can anyone recommend some seed for shaded areas?

Used this last year and it certainly does work. Moss turns black within minutes and ready to scarify 24 hours later.

Just don't spill on hard surfaces as it'll stain a rust colour.

Done ! cloud9 It never looks that great after the winter break, but at least it looks a little neater.

First cut of the year yesterday. Scarified some thin patches, so made a seed/compost mix and spread it under some bird netting.

This morning...frost. I guess I should have waited - I guess more is on the way.

I think with being confined to the house and garden made me want to de every pending job in one day...

With the daytime sunshine it's tempting but look at the forecasts, very cold at night for the next week. I'd wait a fortnight before overseeing.

I wonder if I could cover it for a couple of weeks?
