2020 Lawn thread
Discussion
Took about 2hrs in total. Weather was pretty windy which isn’t ideal. Glyphosate applied by sprayer, and roped the father in law into holding a large piece of cardboard to protect the borders from overspray.
Not certain if the matting will help or not in killing it but I feel better that my 2 cats are less likely to eat it.
I’ll give it 7-10 days then check on progress!

That's my understanding.
Mid-late April is about right, air temp above 13deg? So only a few weeks.
Obviously you don't want to waste the seed, so you're trying to pick a time when it will germinate and the grow well. Warm enough the cold won't get it, without being too try and typically the areas are impractical to water well.
Raking it out too early leaves an unsightly lawn and risks weeds taking hold.

Raked and scarified mine yesterday let's see how that turns out.Mid-late April is about right, air temp above 13deg? So only a few weeks.

I hate to say I have neglected my garden for a few years (working in the house) so with the current measures in place thought it would be a good place to learn more and get the garden right.
I gave it a good cut about a week ago.
However its full of the below...
Are these just weeds? would a weedkiller get rid of them.
Once they are gone I plan to mix up some topsoil with seeds and gently brush over the lawn as there are a few small holes. I had turf laid before and now its settled you can see some un-evenness.
Literally no experience before with gardening, appreciate any advice

I'm certainly no lawn connoisseur, I only have about 40sqm in a rectangle. However was giving it it's first cut yesterday and noticed it was a little patchy in places, probably due to the dog weeing on it and a bit of it being shaded.
Gave it a box of lawn feed, the pellet type and watered it, thinking no more of it.
Que later in the day I see the dog licking the grass, he'd paid close attention to the box, obviously likes the smell. Apparently it's safe for kids and animals but I guess they're not supposed to actually eat it.
He seems fine so far but what an idiot.

Yes you need a lawn weed killer. Get onto YouTube and watch a couple of the lawnsmith videos, should teach you all you need to know.I gave it a good cut about a week ago.

Is this any good for killing moss before scarifying?
Also, can anyone recommend some seed for shaded areas?

Used this last year and it certainly does work. Moss turns black within minutes and ready to scarify 24 hours later. Is this any good for killing moss before scarifying?

Just don't spill on hard surfaces as it'll stain a rust colour.
First cut of the year yesterday. Scarified some thin patches, so made a seed/compost mix and spread it under some bird netting.
This morning...frost. I guess I should have waited - I guess more is on the way.
I think with being confined to the house and garden made me want to de every pending job in one day...

With the daytime sunshine it's tempting but look at the forecasts, very cold at night for the next week. I'd wait a fortnight before overseeing. RichB said:
