I don't think he ever got a definitive reason for the fire starting. I only saw the aftermath and it wasn't pretty. Plus I don't see how it's practical either.

Mine will be staying in the kitchen.
You want to wash dirty laundry in a food preparation area?! When you think about it that's just as bad!

Our washing machine was under a worktop and the socket was behind it. You couldn't have got water on the socket if you'd tried.
Agreed, in an ideal world a kitchen is a pretty poor place to put a washing machine.

I remember going to see a big show house once, and it had a double cupboard in the upstairs hall with a washer and dryer. Above that was airing space for drying and storing ironing. That seemed ideal to me.

One of my rentals has a washer dryer in the bathroom. My electrician does not have a problem with it. Neither did the electrician that installed it. The power comes from a fused spur in an adjacent room. Tenants think it is a great idea

In the UK it's against regulations for health & safety reasons.
Regulations say it's fine if the bathroom is big enough.

One might suggest that anything that's banned for 'H&S reasons' is in all probability perfectly fine...! Indeed it gives me great encouragement to proceed.

That's pretty much the German attitude to it too. Which is why, if space permits, they'll generally have theirs in a basement or utility room. As a result, since they're not on show, German designed washing machine like Miele tend to be rather plain looking.

When looking for our last house we had laundry on the bedroom level as a must have. The idea of having washing in the kitchen just makes me have a cold shiver. My last place had a cupboard the size of a stacking washer and dryer in between the bedrooms. It's no space to lose but so much easier
