What's happening to this place in the back (circled)... is that camera distortion or some serious leaning?
Looks to me like it's collapsing from not having enough support
Built by the same guy that laid the first three courses of block work to the left of the pool.

Yep.
Probably acceptable over there but if a brickie done that here he'd get his ass kicked off site.

Standard practice a brickie gets any deviations (humps/dips in concrete) out on the first course.

Because it creates weak spots. The blocks should all be running parallel with equal thickness of mortar in between for best structural integrity, and balanced transfer of weight through the blocks to the foundations. Angled blocks mess up the transfer of weight.

Well that's my guess anyway wink

Yes I was concerned but it seems to be the way its done here. The terracotta bricks are used everywhere for all purposes. Its usually rendered afterwards to hide the imperfection. As for the neighbours its a disgrace, even the builders here were looking at the mess and mocking it.

The wall I have is not load bearing as the gunite shell is immensely strong in its own right. Plus I have a 10 year guarantee on the structure.

Speaking of gunite..........

Gunite day.

Once again the fluids had to be moved from the road to site across the house, easier this time as the gunite pump and compressor were put on my drive.
Contractor took plenty of steps to mitigate any damage or spillage from the equipment.

Workers arrived at 0730 as usual, preparation took a little over an hour before spraying started.

And after 5 hours we have something that resembles a pool!

We damped down over the next day but even so we had a few minor lines as the gunite dryed. When raised with the project manager he just laughed and said its normal plus I have 100mm of concrete which will be followed by a water proof screen and then tiles...

Four legged inspector seems to approve though.

Just noticed the depth. The shallow end is certainly not very shallow....

Nice thread, enjoying it.

guess it can't be too shallow without being longer. Would be nice to have some steps that the dog can get out of the pool with too though. Had a friend whos dog drowned in the pool while they were out because he couldnt get out...

Ah my neighbours building skills have caught your eye. He was very proud of that and even boasted that he had never done any building before and was surprised how easy it was. I did ask him to at least render it which causes an almost permanent rift between us, anyway I pray it will fall down of its own accord. We will come up with some way of concealing it from view eventually.

What you should get is some expandable trellis with artificial leaves. They come in panels 180cm x 90cm and you just secure in place and instant screening, your neighbour's handiwork a distant memory!!!

Just installed a couple of them to hide the view of the cars under carport from a living room window.

Funny you should say that, the day after the gunite the dog was very quiet. Usually she is running around in the morning up and down the steps. This day no sign of her. I went to the pool site just to see how the job was doing and there she was in the pool unable to get out. She was very pleased to see me and I had the unenviable of carying 20Kg of dog up a ladder to get her out.

Yes steps are installed on the finished pool.

Steps installed, paving stones laid and rendering done. Balustrades are going in. But the pace of work slowed down a lot once the paving started.

Also a big error in contract – I missed the fact that electricity being laid to equipment room wasn’t in the price, rather annoyed at myself over this.

Anyway pics...

Roman steps made

Rendering complete on shell debating whether to paint white..

Paving in progress

Balustrades going in

They are cast stone. Basically cement in a mould. I specified colour. height and style to match the existing ones on the villa.

Very nice. I am planning on buying a villa out in Javea hopefully this year. I have been out a few times and looked at some villas with and without pools. Estate agent estimated 5-8 thousand Euros but yours looks a bit more complex? Do you think it's a good time to buy?

Who knows? Bought in 2006 I lost massively on paper in 2008, but the villa was bought to retire to not as an investment. Its now recovered and then some. Prices are rising in Javea.

Pool 5-8K will get you a hole in the ground a cheap expensive to run pump and maybe some water. Even Flipperpool are quoting 9K now.
