In addition to what I posted earlier under your post - I've now posted on my local village facebook page where he is the plumber, recommended by friends and family obviously. Something very similar to -

'I'm surprised by the recommendations for xxxx plumbing. If you choose this plumber please agree the timescale for the work to be done, as I believed the 'I'll call you once I've got the part' - 3 weeks of no hot water later and then a 45 minute job to replace a Megaflo immersion heater - £230 not well spent.

Short and sweet, and hopefully others won't be fooled by false recommendations.
