Once you've marked the legs for cutting, score the lines with a knife to minimise splintering when you cut.

AKA "How to completely overthink a problem" hehe

Ruler, pencil, square and fine(ish) tenon saw. 15 minutes work if that. Knifing the lines (as above) optional, but not a silly idea if pine is involved and the saw is quite coarse.

Hi all
Please see photo
I need to reduce the height of a wooden desk that has eight legs. I haven't done this type of DIY job before... don't want to use a manual saw, please can you advise what electric saw would be the easiest and cheapest to use please?

Handsaw or multi tool with a wide blade, Clamp some wood as a guide, as this guy does at the beginning of the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mp0EkNCYD7Y

Perhaps just buy a height adjustable chair?

Id use a knife on that, or some cheese wire.

Hand saw I'd say too

You could always have a practice go leaving the desk an inch or two higher, then if you need to adjust your technique you can have another try without leaving it too short
Absolutely the best option if you're not sure of yourself. But handsaw every time for that, definitely. Won't take 10 minutes.

OP: since you're clearly unsure, I'd phone a local timber place and ask them how much to put it through one of their benchsaws. At least it'll be level!

Nope nope nope nope ....... No bench saw. no jigsaw, infact nothing that needs electricity or a battery..... and def do not use a square.

Make sure it's on a flat surface, find something that is the same thinkness as you wish to take off (like a book), pencil line it around each leg. Turn the damn thing on its side, and with either a tenon or fine tooth short jack saw carefully and gently cut along the line. Be especially careful when you get to the end of the cut to reduce the chance of split out.

Simple simple simple. Twenty minutes front start to finish and the cost of a handsaw. smile

Clearly what you need is some detonating cord, a few wraps around the leg where you need it cut, and ignite.

You can use a square - looks like only the insides of the legs are tapered, with the outsides straight. As long as you register the square on the non-tapered faces, it'll work fine.

Looking forward to the saw for cutting legs off desk chair thread if it goes how it would for me...

OP.. cut them all off at the top. Buy some bricks and brick it up. Simple, level, and when you get rid of the desk you can use the bricks to make a BBQ or something.
