I'm a week into sleeping on our new John Ryan Artisan 1500. Not especially cheap at around £900 for a kingsize, but it is amazingly comfortable compared to our 10 year old high street pocket-sprung mattress (and it's a *lot* cheaper than a Vispring). Highly recommended.

I’m happy with my Leesa. Not too hot, comfy, firm and has kept it’s shape. Only 50 nights in though.
Great, now I've got the (admittedly brilliant) Leesa matress advert jingle from Adam Buxton's podcast bouncing around in my head. Thanks! rolleyes

We tried a Simba from John Lewis and returned it within a week, during the summer. I found it quite comfortable but a little warmer than I'm used to.

The missus on the other hand is a hot sleeper and couldn't tolerate it, she'd wake up in the middle of the night sweating and have to go and stand by an open window to cool off.

Got a Sleepeezee 'Dreamer' Travelodge mattress instead. Both happy with that. and £250 cheaper too.

We've had our Super King Zip-Link Artisan 1500 for about 5 years now and it's great, had it delivered to our daughters in the UK then shipped over here to France as they couldn't deliver here.

PS I think we should be getting some sort of group discount due to the number of referrals from here!!

Apologies for a quick thread hijack, but we really need a new mattress too, ours being around 12 years old.

This thread has introduced me to John Ryan, and having read up a lot over the last few days they do seem a good option.

My dilemma is on the spring tension. I have a bad back which has been bothering me more in bed recently. Our current mattress is a Sleepeeze 1400 pocket sprung which I would describe as firm, probably too firm now. According to my weight on JR site (12-13 st) I should be looking at a medium and my wife at about 8st, a Soft. So we should go for a medium/soft split.

We tried the john lewis own brand beds the other day in the store, and they had a split firm/medium bed, but the medium felt very soft and squishy to both of us, they didn't have a soft to try. I know there is no 'standard' to these, so JR beds may feel different but we don't want to get it wrong as even though they do returns, it would be a hassle.

Can anyone with a JR bed comment on the feel of the different tensions? I'm quite happy for the upholstery to feel softer, but not for the whole bed to sink down when you lie on it. Maybe it's because we have been sleeping on a hard bed for so long?

My Ikea mattress is pocket sprung plus has smaller springs on the top as well as a layer of memory foam. It's described as firm but is very soft on top. It feels unfirm but when you sink into it a small way it's very supportive. My back and hip aches have gone and I want to stay in bed in the mornings instead of getting up :-) An identical bed with latex on top instead of memory foam was described as medium firm but felt much harder and was uncomfortable.]

I've also added a John Lewis topper and now my bed feels fab.

I tried the simba and the otty, both where ok, then I tried a tempur mattress and it is miles a head, easily the best nights sleep I have ever had, you don’t get hot like other mattresses and it’s hypoalergenic.

I have the cloud, I would recommend it to anyone. So comfy.

In a similar position and having read all the various help guides, I have to say I’m none the wiser. John Ryan appear to welcome questions so I’m going to give them a bell direct, describe my issues and ask them what they recommend.

It's worth pointing out that the sleeper's weight should be taken into account before deciding what firmness to opt for. Someone who is <10st (for example) would find a soft pocket sprung mattress comfortable and supportive, but probably find a medium firmness mattress too hard and a firm mattress would be like a sleeping on a board for them.

Conversely, a heavier build person, say 17st+, would be crippled on a soft or medium mattress in no time at all, especially if they sleep on their side as their weight compresses the mattress too much leading to a twisted spine as it's not being supported, and generally resulting in very poor sleep.

Don't just buy based on softness, especially if you're a heavier build, as you'll probably live to regret it. Despite my reservations, I went with the advice of a mattress "specialist" and bought a medium-firm mattress (from Ikea) for myself (17.5st) and despite initially thinking "what the hell have I done?" after my first night sleeping on it, it did soften up a bit and now I can sleep like a baby on my side with no discomfort whatsoever.

There's a very fine balance and it's difficult to get it just so. Your head tells you to buy the softest you can find as that must be good for you as it's comfy, but your body tells you to buy more on the firm side as it can't repair and heal you while you're sleeping if you're laying in awkward, unsupported positions.

I've had a Leesa for over a year and a half now and it still seems fine. I am pretty slim though. With my old mattress I found it didn't support my lower back and found it almost impossible to sleep on my back due to really bad aches - it pretty much solved that completely.

In hot summer nights it does yet pretty clammy, I do use a summer duvet though and next summer I think I'll switch to just sheets for the hottest periods.

John Ryan mattress for me as well, went for one of their Tempur equivalents and its by far the comfiest mattress I've ever slept on. It did take a couple of weeks however to get used to it but now I find it fantastic as does my Wife.

This would be top of my list too, I reckon I spend 50-100 nights a year on one of these and generally look forward to being away so I can get a good nights sleep.

John Ryan won't sell you a mattress without telephone advice first so worth ringing them for advice. Never any hard sales so don't worry about calling them. (You can place an order on the web site but they'll call you after.)

As previously mentioned we have an Artisan 1500, based on my weight at the time of purchasing I was thinking I'd probably need a firm mattress but they advised medium and I'm glad they did. It did seem quite solid a first but after a week or two of bedding in it's perfect. I wouldn't have wanted it to be any firmer. I was over 17 st at the time of purchase but knew I was overweight due to a health condition and taking steroids, even then they said the firm mattress was for proper fatties though not in those exact words. I'm now 15.75 stone so a fair bit lighter.

Just an update......sending the Emma mattress back. Constant pain and stiffness. The Mrs feels uncomfortable in the morning too.

They sent a soft foam topper free of charge in an attempt to alleviate my issues but if anything I’m worse.

Let’s see how quickly they collect and refund. John Ryan will be my next port of call.

Just an update from me - had the Otty for a few nights now and it is fantastic! Only had the pillows 1 night (I forgot to put the code it for them but they sent them out next day anyway) and again, very impressed.

I can't imagine we will be sending it back with the 100 nights trial - it's at least as comfortable as other than cost twice as much.

Customer service is excellent too.

Our latest was a stupidly cheap Dormeo Options super-king from Costco earlier this year (on special about £199 at the time, I think only about £250 normally) - we find it really very nice, tbh!
I suspect it will wear out faster.....about a year in so far & happy
Update: we needed a new mattress for another bed, and spotted the Dormeo back on offer at Costco (https://www.costco.co.uk/view/p/dormeo-options-hybrid-mattress-king-150cm-169968). Snapped up and fitted, tried out - just as comfy!
& no, I am not on commission or in any way affiliated with Costco, other than as a paying customer.....just saw the deal was on until this weekend, thought I would share!

Another update....we bought a John Ryan Artisan Naturals medium mattress in December, and having slept on it for 3 weeks now, my back is definitely worse when I wake up than it was on our old mattress, I'm even waking up in the night with back pain which I didn't do before.

We are going to put our old mattress back on the bed for a few nights to see if it helps, but I think it is likely the JR is going to have to go back, which is disappointing as I was hoping it would give me a better nights sleep than our 10+ year old mattress. I think it may be that it is too soft for me. My wife thinks it is ok, but not a big difference given the cost.

We could swap it for another JR, but they don't give you the 60 day trial again (understandably) so whatever we swap it for we would be stuck with, so are betting going for a refund.

Not sure what to do now, wasn't that keen on the foam type Simba, Leesa etc, though noticed that the Emma got a Which Best Buy for 2017 so could do another trial. I guess we are going to have to visit John Lewis and some bed stores, but lying on a bed for 30 seconds isn't really going to tell you if a mattress works for you or not.

If it helps we are still really happy with our Otty. From what I've read, and comparing it to a Simba at John Lewis, it's a bit firmer than the other similar mattresses.

Might be worth a try?
