Most tilers round here use WBP ply in bathrooms, or Knauf Aquapanel. The main problem with plasterboard in bathrooms is water penetration through gaps in the grout/sealant.

This causes the plaster in the board to fail, and the tiles to end up on the floor. Moisture Resistant board has resistance in the paper covering the board, but this is, of course open at the ends.
Or as I found recently your arse going through the plasterboard should you slip due to it being completely waterlogged and not much stronger than a wet paper bag.
Graphic illustration for the benefits of ply/Aquapanel. Hope it didn't hurt too much.

never use PVA and never use any adhesive that states pva is ok because its not
if its a shower area then either tank or use hardibacker or similar.
personally if the shower tray is solid ie: no movement then plaster board is fine, BS now wants tanking but the main problem is baths or showers with movement or dropping especially in new houses.
make sure you have a good seal ie: the tiles sit on the bath or tray ie: no gaps filled with silicone, sometimes you even have to cut the bathor tray into the wall a bit so the tiles sit on the bath or tray, leave a 3mm gap between the bottom of the tile and the bath or tray then fill with silicone DO NOT grout the this joint and fill the bath with water prior to siliconing.
if you want more detail pm me and i will give you my phone number and i will explain whatever you want.

Do Not use PVA, Never ever use PVA.

You wan't something like BAL Prime APD or the like.
To be more accurate, it depends on the tiling adhesive (Unibond powdered adhesive actually recommends PVA for example) - but then again, they make the stuff so no surprise there hehe )
personally i wouldnt use unibond adhesive if they were giving it away.
you dont need to bond plaster board with BAL or mapei tubbed adhesive,i do but you dont need to.
the only time you really need to bond walls is on plaster and only if using powdered adhesive as it reacts with the plaster.

using wbp ply fine on stud work whereas PB can be dot and dabbed, also the correct adhesive for ply is really expensive as is 3/4 ply.
