We currently have a honeywell but thinking of switching to Ecobee4 with the built-in alexa. I just think it's way too expensive though

Why would you do that?

How does Ecobee4 keep a radiator off ?

We've had our Evohome install in for about 4 months now. I haven't been able to work out whether its reduced the amount of oil we're using, but anecodtally it has.

Of more interest is the change its made to our lives! our house is old and draughty, but weve gone from having some roms far too hot and others too cold to have all the rooms just about perfect all the time.

We're still tweaking things here and there, but its just about right.

So far we have 10 zones and 14 rads controlled, with one more zone/rad to add.

I was most pleased with the lounge which has 3 rads all controlled by a wall mounted "rotary" dial display (HR61?)- its really cool.

Finally got used to the App whcih is also working well now.

The software update on the evohome controller has made a big difference- tells you all sorts of useful things - especially which zones are calling for heat, and how much. This morning we had one zone requiring 3% heat which made me laugh.

This sounds like exactly what we will be aiming for when we complete in the next few weeks albeit LPG instead of oil - would you mind sharing how much it cost and how easy it was to install please?

Does anyone know exactly what the calibrate/temperature offset on an Evohome HR92 TRV does?

I've read the manual, and a few posts on various forums, and there seems to be a lot of confusion over exactly how it affects the operation of the TRV (when it opens and closes), and the room temperature displayed on the TRV and the controller.

In some rooms the TRV and controller show a lower temperature than a thermometer, in others it's higher. The calibrate setting supposedly allows for this, but how? Changing it from -3 to +3 has no effect on the temperature displayed, and it doesn't seem to change the displayed temperature at which the TRV opens.
It's doing something though, as I got a "window" (open) message while playing with the settings.

Having added some extra loft insulation over the kitchen/diner at the weekend, the room is now a couple of degrees warmer than the TRV is set for, which prompted me to play with the calibration.
The bathroom has always been a couple of degrees colder than than the TRV. I understand why this can happen (convection currents and valve location), I'm just struggling to get my head around the logic behind the calibrate function.

I've used 4 different digital thermometers - 2 probe type food thermometers, a non-contact "laser" device, and one built into a digital energy meter. the readings from all 4 are within 1 degree once the room has stabilised. The TRVs in these 2 rooms are 2 or 3 degrees out.

In our case it was quite hard as none of the rads had TRV valves on them so i got a plumber in to replace all the rads- neither did we have a normal S or Y plan system (actually we've got an un pressurised heating system- which is OLD)

The setting up of the TRVs and control was easy- i wouldn't however have done the electrical setup, lbeit it looks pretty simple/

First let me state that I'm not familiar with Evohome (I use Heatmiser Neo) but I don't think the above would be due to calibration (though the other things in your post might be). I assume that Evohome will learn over time how many degrees per hour it can warm the room by and has maybe overshot due to you adding insulation and reducing the losses. I expect it should self correct once it spots this new pattern.

When you compare with other thermometers are you putting them in the same place as the TRVs i.e. right next to the radiator?

If its like the tado one then the offset can be used to tweak the temperature: https://support.tado.com/hc/en-gb/articles/2015874...

For example. If you have it set to 18 but find that when the thermostat thinks its 18, your room temperature is actually 20, you can adjust the offset so that the displayed temp on the tado is 20 (18 + offset of 2).

Adding the insulation has meant that the room actually reaches the set temperature, previously the radiator struggled to get the room much over 18 degrees on a cold day. When I went into the kitchen yesterday it was warmer than usual, which prompted me to check what the temperature actually was.

Overshoot and lack of learning time after adding the insulation could be the cause, but I'm trying to figure out what the calibrate option actually does.

I tried it again this morning. Temperature in the room was stable, TRV programmed to drop to a lower temperature, radiator and pipework cold. The room was at 19 degrees on the thermometers, 17 degrees according to Evohome.
I adjusted the TRV by 0.5 degrees (displayed 17.5), and the motor partially opened the valve. This despite having the calibrate option set to +2, which should have corrected the under reading.

I have put thermometers right next to the kitchen TRV, as well as on the table in the middle of the room. Less than a degree between the positions once the room has stabilised, always higher than the reading reported by the TRV.

That's how I'd expect it to work, and how the manual suggests it should work. The temp displayed on the TRV and controller are unchanged though, and it doesn't seem to affect the point at which the valve decides to open.

User Error!

After posting here just now, I searched for any news on Evohome firmware updates. One has recently been rolled out, so I checked that I had received it (I have). While looking around to see what had changed, I noticed that the kitchen/diner zone was configured to use the controller's temperature sensor, rather that the HR92's sensor. When I first installed the system the controller was in the kitchen. I moved it to the hallway a few months ago when I fitted a wall mount kit. Forgot to change the assigned sensor. Oops!

With the zone set to use the HR92 as the sensor, the calibrate function is now doing something. The display on the HR92 and on the controller now both change when I alter the offset. I just need to tweak the calibration once it's settled down.

(Self-inflicted) problem solved.

It does seem a bit confusing that the HR92's display would show the controller's sensor reading rather than it's own (when set to show room temp, rather than set temp) though.

BTW, the new firmware shows heat demand percentage in each zone in the installer config menu. Useful, but better if it also showed an icon in each zone on the home page.

Well I checked this evening and the bd thing was slowly working it’s way off the thread again.

So this time a packed the adaptor with some paper so there was no movement on the valve with the screw tightened with no overlap. Now the thing you screw on that the stat attaches to can be fully tightened which is better.

Let’s see how long it stays in for this time.

Can anyone tell me the latest FW number for the EVOHome, and where to find this on the module?

Thanks smile
If you've got "outside temperature" on the home zone screen, and a "system summary" page in the installer/configuration menu, then you have the new firmware.

I don't think it's possible to force an update, you have to wait for it to be sent out to you.

Latest firmwares start with a "2", but I can't find the info on mine.

Newbie question for evohome.

I've got additional valves (hr92 things) for rooms with more than one rad.

The process was;
- Remove Zone (which I hope was unbinding valve)
- Add zone
- Add the 'old' hr92 first, add the 'new' hr92 as second (it confirms 2 actuators 2 somethings)

Now the question is, which hr92 will be used to measure temperature, first or second?

Thanks.

I spotted the Outside Temperature reading on mine tonight (before seeing your post) and just assumed I hadn’t noticed it before. Thank you!

I'm thinking about fitting either Tado or Evohome, and having trawled through reviews etc I'm veering towards the former. Geofencing is quite important (which if I'm reading it right Evohome doesn't natively support) but Evohome seems better suited to bigger houses with more zones. Is that a fair analysis of the benefits of each one over the other?

It's not that. I noticed that our honeywell's been acting weird lately. It would log off on its own. This has never happened before.

I've had Evohome for a couple of years now, it's great and does everything I need, but something keeps bugging me.

At 11pm during the week ALL ZONES (12 of them) are set to be turned down to 12 degrees or less, (unused rooms like guest bedrooms etc are set to 5 degrees). The hot water is set to OFF at the same time. For the next hour or so the boiler will fire and heating water pumped around the system every 10 minutes or so (duration: less than a minute). The controller shows that every single room is easily 5 degrees above the target temperature - so why is my boiler firing. Any ideas?
