I’ve just fixed with Octopus through peace of mind really. Happy with the forecast as I was catching up with the monthlies so they've gone from £320 to £220.

I can’t see energy getting any cheaper as (European) demand goes up in the winter, & given Vlad will probably play silly buggers, it’s a no brainer for me.

Eon fix is 12-13% cheaper than the current prices and guarantees to be £25 a year per fuel cheaper for the year. Contemplating taking the fix.

I looked at that, its cheaper than I'm paying now with Eon Next but they want to put my DD up again if I take that.

I'm currently paying £190 a month but I think this is where it's at to cover off some debt from last years winter - currently standing at -£14 so I should be +£50 by the time the next direct debit clears.

The Next Flex forecast (at todays rates) is saying I should currently be paying £149.48 (which is pretty much spot on). So the FIX forecast at £145.41 seems about right.

So although my DD is currently high, it's enough to cover the year so if anything it should go down.

We've moved onto Octopus Flux after we finally got export sorted for our solar set up at the end of August. While it's a bit late in the year to get the full benefit of 'banking' power we've still managed to put over 300kWh in credit, which in theory is enough to cover our shortfall in the winter months, I don't think it's worth us changing tariff, especially without an EV.

I'm waiting to see if they try to increase our DD as I've dropped it to £66 given the credit we've built up since our solar was installed (used hardly any power off grid and only gas for hot water/cooking on the hob). Based on last year's use we already have enough in credit, with the £66 PM to get through the winter, but I suspect they'll try to get us to increase the DD regardless.

Just looked at that no difference to my quotes from OVO, sticking with current tariff.

Recently switched to a plan with off-peak prices because I have a PHEV. We have got into the habit of setting the dishwasher and washing machines to come on at midnight too. Daytime costs are a little more expensive but I am sure I'll make savings with the cheap off-peak rate.

Electricity
30.30 p/kWh, 45.21 p/day
Off Peak 9.40 p/kWh (Car charging, dishwasher, washing machine and greenhouse heater, during the night is when it mostly to come on)

Gas
7.60 p/kWh, 26.36 p/day

Estimated annual cost for electricity and gas Estimated cost
£4,234.74

Seems dangerous. Iv had 2 machines in my life catch fire and had to throw them out the back door. Glad it never happened at midnight.

It *is* dangerous, happens very often, I've also had to dump someones washing machine out after smelling the burning electrics. Certain things are prone to catching fire & you don't want to leave them running unattended. Battery chargers are another one.

Flooding is another risk, though less so if the machines have cutoff valves. Had that (almost) when I left a machine running overnight on cheap rate, when I woke up the power was out; solenoid valve had burst, the water shorted the machine & tripped the power, that stopped the water via the cutoff. Worked it out when I put the power back on, heard the fountain gushing then the lights went out again.

TL;DR - running stuff overnight is very very risky.

The other point is do people sit and watch their washing machine and/or dishwasher for the whole cycle even if they put it on during the day? I'm sure I don't, so the first I'd know is if I heard the smoke detector kicks in, which is the same as it would be in the middle of the night.

Difference at night is that we shut the kitchen door so the 'beeps' when the dishwasher finishes don't wake us up. I don't bother putting the washing machine on overnight though as the clothes will only sit in it wet for hours until we get up and empty it.

Same here
Phev/Dishwasher/Washine machine all timed to complete at the end of the 8pkwh period (0100-0600)
Now the cloakroom electric towel rad is timed 0500-0630, so get hot mostly in the cheap period.
Day rate slightly higher

But nigh on 50% of our usage is now in the cheap period.

The electric bill is about the same, phev charging included.

So you didn't have a flood but almost?

Our cheap rate ends at 5am (Octopus Flux as we export solar and don't have an EV), so there's no way either of us are getting up at that time, especially since we're retired. biggrin

I am waiting till everyone gets electric cars and charges them over night. Then when I do all my washing etc it'll be during the day which will then be off peak smile
