Quite.

Does amuse me how people from other parts of the country totally and utterly under-estimate how expensive London can be.

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prope... - not even central lol.
I don't underestimate it, nor do I think many others do on PH either, I think we all know how utterly ridiculous London property prices are.

I think you're confusing underestimation with incredulousness, coz for me at least, I never cease to be incredulous at London property prices. A highlight for me was a mid-terrace ex-council on the go for o/o £1.3m a few months back.

Genuinely hilarious smile

That's rather nice but then with my Northern English head on, if you're spending around £500k on a property then this is exactly the sort of size and standard you should be looking at. At less than £400k, that's an absolute steal. My London commuter belt friends will think there's a 0 missing somewhere biggrin

Congrats - looks fantastic for this area! We're about 10 miles away and with a similar budget, but ended up admitting defeat locally and so about to complete on a new build near Bicester having decided we'd rather compromise on location than house. Guessing you've had to do neither.

I'm aware that many would consider new build a compromise! Especially a Bovis one...

This, for anyone interested.
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prope...

Site is much less packed in than other new build developments we looked at - all built on brown field site formerly owned by an air base, so more green spaces, slightly larger gardens etc.

I feel for you- we almost ended up doing the same to be honest- we've been looking for 2 years and must have put offers on 10 properties (6 of which are still unsold 12m later). We were getting close to buying new build just to get a house!

Like you we looked at Bicester and i thought it wasn't a bad development- the other one we looked at was a 4 bed new build in middle winterslow- but they were overpriced. Someone mentioned on the "price fall thread" that new developers have just taken the 20% help to buy scheme and added it to the price of homes- lookd on a pound per sw foot basis they are absolutely correct and i coudlnt' reconcile myself with the risk of buying an overpriced house that we couldn't sell later.

The one that we almost bought was this http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prope... in Burghfield common

Nice garden with lots of sun, double garage, loads of parking, backing into quiet woodland and a short walk to shops, playground and a gym. The only downside was that the other side of the road is a bit skanky, but we worked out you would pretty much never go out the front door. Lots of room too- 4 beds and an easy fifth....

Don't get me wrong, it's a superb looking property. But it's in the middle of bloody nowhere!

We could probably all sell our houses and afford to buy that. But we don't want to live there. Hence the price....

Not my cup of tea.

Amazing though, even if the lands inexpensive you still need to pay for the build.

Just checked Rightmove ... 500k gets you a 6 bed detached, plus a 3 bed semi plus a 1 acre plot with planning.

Not bad, if you can put up with the views wink

Those houses in Manchester are interesting. Half (less in the case of the "posh 2 bed" if that is genuinely the nicest area of Manchester) the price of similar properties in Zone 3 SW London.

Thing is, my salary up there would be similarly affected in my industry.

But I'd live nearer the countryside, and the driving roads of Wales, and nearer to some interesting bits of the UK! SE is crowded these days...

How do I get my wife and all my friends to move with me?

St Albans is a very expensive area. Very nice though.
