Looking at upgrading our locks/handles so have had a good looks through this thread.

If I get the high security Mila PAS handles, do you need a longer barrel? Seems from the pictures you need a bit more 'key' to reach the lock...

I've not had a problem with mine fitted with avocets, even with the free spinning plate on the front which covers the keyslot. You should have plenty of key left to reach it.

Hi

I have had a locksmith come to look over my home and to discuss security in addition to the alarm etc

He suggested fitting 4 ultion locks to the 4 doors and also some handles that have a lock on them so the handle can’t be pushed down

He quoted £600 for the job

Is this fair and reasonable?

Is what he is saying logical and does it make sense?

About £150 per door for locks, handles and labour doesn't seem unreasonable.

But if the labour is eurocylinder lock replacement then you can do it yourself. It's 3 screws.

For comparison, I've just fitted 3 Mila PAS24 handle sets and 4 keyed alike Avocet ABS locks for £290 all in. Very easy job.

Isn't the lock supposed to break at a secure point?

Blow torch method has been seen in another PH thread, it's not exactly a science, and probably isn't the fastest way in. Not sure how wood composite responds to such an attack.

Seems like a lot of fking about. At the end of the day if someone wants to get in then they will.

Which is why you think about layering security rather than focusing on one particular "thing".

Locks and handles is one but sadly at least in my area at the moment certain safety glass is a common target.

confused Despite the video, I still don’t understand how the blowtorch helps anyone break in. Mole grips were still needed to break off the handle. Why bother with a blowtorch too?

Anti-snap locks are in two forms, 3* lock or a 1* lock and 2 star handle.

The 2 star handles are machined from solid to prevent mile grip attacks. Unless that is you burn the handle off the door first...

What’s the best euro cylinder out there at the moment?

Ultion? Avocet? Evva?

I reckon Evva is best – a big step up from the likes of Avocet and Ultion. The Evva EPS is excellent, but I’d go for an Evva ICS if I could afford it.

However, the 3-star Evva ICS costs about £80 per euro cylinder yikes

At a more realistic price, I’d go for the newly launched Mul-T-Lock Breaksecure 3DS.

Our 3-4 yr old ABS Avocet on the front door (Hormann) fell apart today... put the key in, opened the door, pulled the key out and all the internals, springs etc fell out! Had to get a locksmith out. He said he doesn't like the Avocets and sold (and fitted) me a EVVA ICS. I have no experience of EVVA. Are they better than the Avocets? It's made me realise how f**ck*d we could of been had this happened on the wrong day - luckily the door had opened and I could get a locksmith within the hour. It's surprisingly easy to fit but would of had to of left the house unlocked whilst tried to find a new off the shelf lock hence ringing locksmith.

Evva makes some of the world’s best locks. Provided you’ve got the 3-star version of the Evva ICS, it will be miles better than an Avocet.
