Is it just me who puts the heating on for half an hour at the beginning of September to check it's going to work OK when I (and everyone else in my area) needs it in October? If it goes wrong I want to call the engineer when he's got no work on.
I never switch it off.

It only kicks in when it is cold enough anyway.
This. I give it a quick blast in the summer to circulate it but other than that it’s set to 21c all year round.

Car a/c is on all round as well.

The wife put ours on today, she does have a bad cold (which she most likely caught from me) so understandable.

I have never used oil ever.. so ive no idea how that compares.
Isn't it the best one? Doesn't take ages to heat up and keeps the heat topped up.
from what ive read since last posting on here. it seems the electric/convection ones heat up quicker... but at the same time have not heat retention. the oil filled ones take longer to heat up.. but also take longer to cool down.
Yes, the oil acts as a thermal store. I believe it also adds to the longevity of the elements, as they heat and cool slower and more evenly than they would in air.
how true is this in terms of longevity? because i am looking at all the stuff on sale in argos. very few buy the oil version.

I've got one of these thermostat thingies, I just leave the heating on all year round and set the thermostat to 18... Isn't that what everyone does?

Nope, it goes full time Nov - March with the occasional October blast - but way to early yet...

Same. It had certainly kicked in this morning, was only 3 degrees on my commute home.

It was 31 degrees in Malaga today and now I'm home it's single figures and pissing down. I put two fleeces and a hat on. Not the heating yet. It's only just October.

Yep. Baffling to me that people turn heating on and off at different times of the year.

Just set the system up properly and let the thermostat control the temperature - like it was designed to.

Completely bizarre that some people wait until a certain date, but I guess they think my way is odd as well.

Are these the same people that set the climate control in the car to 16 on hot days and 28 on cold days?

Surely your comfort trumps what month it is. You are obviously cold, why not put the heating on.

Madness. Gas isn’t even that expensive.

Got moaned at yesterday that it was cold in the morning but wifey couldn’t figure out how to switch from summer (hot water only) setting and winter settings (it’s one bloody switch!)so had the big switch on when I got home.

Makes sense to test it I suppose and the house was toasty warm.

Will set it for a hour in the morning and a few hours in the evening from now on. Can’t stand a cold house.

Don’t forget to put the coats and hats on in the car if it’s cold outside

(Long sentence alert.)

I think the idea of switching it off is to avoid the chance of those days in the late summer where you come home from work and the house/flat is really hot because the heating has unnecessarily switched itself on because it got cold for 10 minutes in the late afternoon because of some freak combo of very temporary conditions.

Mines is so old it has an on and off switch. Would be good to just leave it on and it deals with it.

It depends on how much your energy bills worry you. We keep ours off during this part of the year and use the manual boost button if we need it.

It was a bit cold this morning but everyone was leaving the house so no need to heat it. Tonight whoever is first in the house will fire it up.

Room TRV's as all set low as well, apart from the living room.

We only have it on full time if day temps are near zero.

Fired up yesterday. Weather compensation means a nice even temperature.

I still haven't mastered this one. If I leave early and I'm out until late, does it mean the house is heated while I'm out for 15 hours on a colder day.

At the moment I set the temp to 12C when I'm out or in bed and 18C when I want a bit of heat.

For those of you that keep your heating on all year round and just let the thermostat do the work, presumably you have also implemented day parting? I.e. so that it only comes on during the hours of the evening, for example, in order to avoid wasting energy heating the house when you're not there during the day?
